Less of a pain than the German one from my experience. Once you get the 80ft Nasty, you start rolling in rp from ship damage.
It's a double edged sword. If anybody has decent accuracy, they are going to inflict more damage to you than you will to it, simply because they can more of a hit. I actively hunt LS-3s for free RP and have told friends to do so too. They're that easy to destroy.
Don't get me wrong though, if you're good at hit and run stuff, then they can be very effective.
that 15mm auto cannon not gona save your life when one 50 cal barrage kill all the 7 people in that tiny bathtub.
For reserves, I probably would go with the LS-3 as easiest to use because the gun has clear 360 firing arcs. (Also one long belt, though you have to fire bursts or it'll jam.) The US PB-6 (and even more PB-20) gets awkward firing arcs, and the first two soviet boats can't shoot straight forward at all.
However, I think the US and soviet gunboats at BR 1.7 have more interesting capabilities than corresponding German boats, and the 1.7 schnellboot is very vulnerable despite (or because of?) its size.
I don't really know how things go beyond that.
All guns overpenetrate boats unless you hit a heavy component or use explosive shells. Most boats are mostly if not entirely unarmored. Small-caliber explosive shells, IME, aren't as good as you might think though.
I was using an I-16 with rockets for a while. I had much better results with the penetrating RBS rockets than the pure HE RS rockets. Boats are so big that an AP round passing through can do more damage than a small explosion that only reaches a little bit into the hull. Even 37mm I prefer the AP shells to the HE shells.
