The armor is good against non APFSDS and ATGMs, but it is more of an unreliable armor protection rather than something to matter - play like you don’t plan on getting shot, and if you mess up, the BBD or UFP add on armor could give you a lucky 2nd chance.
The APFSDS is the same as the T-55A, as no better shell is available for the 100mm in the USSR. The shell is good until you get to 9.3+, which you can’t see 10.0 unless you pair it with something else. HEAT-FS is good though with 390mm against RHA, so if your opponent doesn’t use ERA or Composite, HEAT is a viable shell as well - and you get the laser rangefinder that is accurate to the nearest 5 meters up to 5km away, so missing isn’t as much of a problem.
The ATGM is phenomenal, not much else needed to say, it is a great ATGM.
Mobility is good, it gets a better engine and is decently fast.
As well, the tank was actually produced and used, so I have no remorse to spamming it, if that matters to you - I dislike prototypes a bit more than playing real tanks.
It is also great at SB - it is in the BR bracket where it will see both 7.7-9.3 tanks, as well as 8.7 to 10.0 tanks, if you are a SB player. It can see 2/3 days in SB basically, the 2nd you do fight 10.0s, but my first battle with it I killed 3 tanks (including 2 Type 90s), so it can’t be that bad...
APFSDS reperesented on the T-55A and T-55AM is the best 100mm KEP available to the USSR, so the 330 some mm penetrating APFSDS will never see an upgrade.
However, it is a good shell, despite it’s lower penetration to most shells of 8.7/9.0.
I personally don’t use the APCBC, it is great on a T-54 at 7.7, but at 8.7+, I would rather have the APFSDS. It as overal better penetration, better vilocity and range, and it does significant damage post penetration, so the extra HE filling isn’t that nessesary imo. Since you can only take 4 shells, id rather just bring APFSDS, the ATGMs, smoke, and HE/HEAT-FS for soft targets. But this isn’t saying APCBC isn’t good, it is a great shell, but I just don’t think it’s pros are worth it’s cons when comparing it to the APFSDS, which is a better KEP shell for this 1980’s tank.
As well, APDS has better angled penetration chance than APCBC though: APFSDS usually has around a 100% penetration chance (if have enough penetration) around 74ish degrees, 50% for 76-78 degrees (so regardless of penetration and thickness, you have a 50/50 chance of penetrating), and a 100% chance of bouncing at 80 some degrees.
Meanwhile, unfortunately APCBC has a 100% of pen. under 48 degrees, a 50/50 chance of bouncing at 63 degrees regardless of armor (which most takes at this BR have 60 degrees of sloping...), and a 100% chance of ricochet at 70 some degrees - unfortunately when considering these stats, APDS-FS has much better angling performance than full-caliber penetrators.
