The mk.24 is probably the first and only Spitfire that can out perform the 109. A skilled 109 pilot will always outfly a skilled Spitfire pilot, except with the Mk. 24
by the time you hit the F mk 16, LF and the latewars the spitfire has simply made the 109 irrelevant
spitfire LF MK 9 any version is the best bang for your buck, simply insane plane to fly

Looked like a whole lot of luck to me. Not very often you're going to take that much damage in a Spitfire
overall it depends what you want, for pure speed the US, GER and RU trees have excellent options while on the other scale planes like the A7M provide a great balance between speed, agility and dogfighting characteristics
