The 13x64 round has a considerably shorter cartridge case than a soviet or US 50 cal (12.7x108 and 12.7x99, respectively), which gave it a far lower MV and KE than both of these rounds, but its quite hefty punch came from its HE rounds. The buggers carried 1.8g of explosives, which is good for this caliber. The Shvak, for example , has 2-3g (although it isnt the most powerful cannon, it gets the job done nicely), which isnt much more. The soviet Berezin UB also had HE rounds, but they werent as powerful (although its HE rounds were no joke, the UB's power came mostly from the AP-I ammo).
I played WT sim for 3 years, and whenever I ran out of cannon ammo and was down to the 131s, I would call it quits and RTB for more cannon ammo, as the 131s had a really bad damage output. For the last 5 months ive been playing Il-2 Great Battles, and in this far better game the 131 is a really nice weapon. You can actually trust them, and they are realiable agaisnt any fighter. Ive shot down many rugged planes, such as Thunderbolts, Tempests and even Sturmoviks with just the 131s, and it doesnt take many hits. With a good burst you will deal a lot of damage to almost any aircraft, and if you run out of cannon ammo, the 131s can do the job very well
