Why not have radiators open the whole time?
They decrease drag and increase engine cooling, why not just have them open all the time..?

...because they *increase* drag, not decrease.

MEC — Manual Engine Controls

? that doesnt help me at all

Go to controls, and select “Full-real controls” (you can use mouse aim with MEC, but you have to go there to set up controls), and go down to Manual Engine Controls and set up keybindings.

With MEC, you can:

Adjust throttle and controls for individual engines on multi-engine aircraft

Adjust radiator

Adjust oil radiator

Change supercharger

Micromanage turbocharger (but if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can damage your engine)

Adjust fuel mixture

Adjust prop pitch (but if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can damage your engine)

Prop feathering

Change magnito

and any more that I missed.

With MEC, you can get a little more power for some aircraft, if you know what you’re doing. Which does include adjusting the radiators, changing the balance between cooling and less drag.

This, it's hard to learn but it can really give you a huge advantage over others. I myself only use it to manually open and close my radiators. If you have them at around 30%, you can have infinite WEP in the BF-109 K4, which is worth for that extra drag you get from having them open.

You realize the OP didn't ask how to do it?

tks for info, I'm not much of a flyer, I can bomb ok in ground rb but am not very good 1v1 plane, this would at least let me run away........

tks again, not something i will use now, but noted for later.

if you are in a p51d or h open the radiatiors to full at all times, they utilized something callled the meredith effect irl which actually caused them to generate thrust as well as drag, while an oversimplification warthunder models them as causing no drag on those aircraft

Yeah. "do i", not "how do I"

In fact. The question as written makes sense...

Not exactly, he should have written "should I" instead of "do I" to avoid confusion
DevilDaRebel May 11, 2019 @ 11:39am
HE is asking how to adjust the radiator based on altitude. Come on...

Edit: I just realized Kami only told him how to open the radiators, but not how MUCH it should be opened. I can't answer that, I don't use MEC.
