In AB, it's usually not a problem to lock on. Occasionally takes a couple tries, but it seldom becomes a problem. The range on it (for the F3D-1) is short enough that it has a narrow range of use before you get the usual AB lead indicator pop up too, and occasionally the radar will produce glitchy results. Still, I've gotten some nice radar-directed shots in.
In RB, radar is significantly less reliable because if you're pointing your nose anywhere near the ground you get ground clutter noise washing out the signal. At low altitudes the radar may be non-functional in level flight! Which is especially problematic if you're a heavy early jet fighter that would like to attack from above rather than horizontally. On the other hand RB makes the search and targeting functions both rather more helpful.
