Report a translation problem
It's the same effect as if you drove up a hill with a tank and tried to shoot down to the other side, but your tank is pointing up so much that the turret cant turn down far enough.
You can avoid it by turning slower, or just waiting for the ship to level out again. The reason you've "had to" do random stuff like zooming in and out or firing a salvo, is because during that time the ship has leveled out, and you've assumed it was because of that random stuff you did.
