Similar thing happened to my brothers laptop, at the time was top of the range gaming laptop and he played BF2:Bad Company, and whatever the newest CIV game was around that time. After a few weeks it got lower and lower frame rates until it was unplayable. Took it to a PC shop, when he went to pick it up he asked if we had pets cos when he took the case apart all the air intakes were clogged up with dust and dog hair. He then advised to buy air in a can and give the intakes a blast once a week to force out dust etc. Also suggested playing on a clean table. My brother used to use his laptop on the floor or bed so that's how it got so much crap in it.
That or you're accidentally running on integrated graphics.
It doesn't take much dust/lint to clog up a laptop's air vents to where it won't cool properly and where throttling can start to occur.
