War Thunder
I'm only interested in Jet combat. Do I need to spend tons of money to do so?
Note that I've never played War Thunder. Ever.

I don't know how much pay 2 win this game is. I'm mainly interested in learning and playing realistic mode with jet aircraft. How horrible is the grind to do so? Is it fun in the end?

Hmm, you've convinced me to uninstall the game. Not for me apparently.

I was looking for something a bit closer to DCS but without needing a joystick, I'd like to play a somewhat realistic flight game with mouse and keyboard and not have to read 200 pages of how to fly the plane first like DCS needs.

WT arcade mode is something that doesn't interest me at all, or things like Ace Combat where planes have 1000 missiles onboard and pull off ridiculous maneuvers with no problem whatsoever.

Thanks everyone for your answers!

The game is quite nice, graphics and gameplay. Of course, you gotta have some practice and develop strategies if you want to win. There is no hand-holding, it's quite hard to go against experienced players. But people say it's not about the destination, it's the journey. Sure, the grinding is long, but it only makes it all worth it when you finally get that vehicle you were wishing for. A premium account helps a lot if you can afford it, but it's not mandatory. All-in-all, I've been playing this game since the closed beta and I can say that it still brings joy when you shoot down an enemy jet with a well placed cannon/MG burst.

I've clocked in 1200 hours on World of Warships and got several full tiers without paying anything all the while having fun with the game. What 500 hours of War Thunder are going to get me as a comparison?

Note, that I'm not comparing the gameplay, I know they are different games. I'm just comparing the grind. Anyone playing WoWs and WT both here? Maybe help me understand how the grind is in WT in comparison with a grind that I already know.
Have you tried "realistic mode"? You seem to not like arcade, which as it states is the arcade style mode. Realistic mode gives the planes at least somewhat realistic flight models or tries to, you get your one plane, take off, fly around, fight the enemies, etc.

I'd recommend trying that first before just throwing the game away. I have some friends who play WT for only its realistic air mode.

Actually I've watched today several videos, including Phlydaily and some tutorials of the different modes. The realistic mode is definitely the only mode that interests me. I just don't want to hit a huge paywall as these 'free' games usually try to hide behind or spend precious free gaming time playing for 10+ hours only to realize that the grind is ridiculous and pointless.

Well, the grind is indeed high.
But if you really are only interested in playing jets then why not.
Air rb only needs a single plane to play.
But you wont have access to any other jets without grinding the tree or paying for another premium jet/bundle.
But with only one premium jet you can unlock the whole nations planes if you want to.

Premium vehicles have no research penalty downwards, that means researching low level planes can be REALLY fast with them.

Not running out of SL while doing it is another story...

As I said, there is no hand-holding, it's hard. The grind is difficult? Yes. Personally, I had lots of fun when using mid-tiers to research top-tiers. Honestly, I find it more interesting to use mid-tiers rather than top-tier tanks now that I've unlocked basically all US vehicles. For planes, getting the F-100 and breaking the sound barrier for the first time was quite exciting, but the gruesome turn combat you get with the biplanes and even Spits vs. the BF-109s is something that sets itself apart.

I am personally in love the with the air to air system because it's so fun to use especially since you can use it out of shooting range to force the enemy to turn and lose some speed to get them back into firing range one game I just used the air to air missiles and got 4 kills this was in air RB was using the (seahawk.mk100)
Good for you that they reduced the rp requirements quite a bit for rank IV and V now...

But they path to rank V is long, and if u don´t like the low rank fights, chances are u wont enjoy the high ones either. It is fun tho, being able to climb quite fast and i´ve enjoyed the jet fights so far quite a bit.

Play some, if u like it...Then go for it. If u wanna go from my invite, (send a pm if so) then i can probably hook u up with some DLC for some free premium time... Gonna see what DLC´s there are at the moment that i can afford to gift to u, but pm first.

If u dont switch nations around and let crews do some repairing after rank III, affording expert crews might be tough. And that´s important if u don´t wanna black out all the time in realistic.

This may be different in realistic tho, my progress has 80% or so been through arcade.

I´m 100% free to play, sort of - have not spent any real money but have gotten the DLC´s etc. I got all jets on japan. A few on UK. Almost there on US and USSR... However i did invite a lot of players before, getting quite a bit of eagles/premium currency that way...

And I have like a month of pure playtime. Guess u can reach a jet in a week or two of excessive playing with premium focusing on one nation.

US: RankIV/beginning of Rank V
Germany: Rank III
Russia: Rank IV/beginning of rank V
UK: RankIV/Couple-three airplanes on Rank V
Japan: Got all planes but 1 newly added on one of the mid ranks.. IV(?)
Italy: Rank II/beginning of rank III
France Rank II/beginning of rank III

Regarding free 2 play games, my game time is around 1 hour a day. I planned to quit World of Warships in order to replace it with War Thunder.

I don't really care about a possible need to change nations to keep my economy up. I just don't want to have to play for months for minor progression. From the comments I read so far, I understand that the grind is almost unbearable.
Took me a whole year to get my first jet

That's why I'm now reading info about Modern Air Combat from Eagle Dynamics. :D

The 'grind' is quite bearable...if you aren't actually making it all about grinding to a target.

If you are, it's probably going to be a plain of endless suffering. If you can't enjoy the journey it's definitely not going to be worth it, and there's a decent chance you won't enjoy the destination anyway.
If you only want jets just buy one of the jets. Playing a bunch of WW1/2 you don't like won't be any fun.

If you grind with the target of playing jets (and without just buying one, like in the sale ATM) it may be.

But there is fun to be had in WT just playing it.

Jets are like "end game" in WT.

Just reading the previous comments:
+1 to utzgoroth :-)

I second that...........
