When I was researching the shermans, I didn't bother buying the A2 and A3 until I had an excess of SL. the A1 is probably the best of the 76 Sherman's imo.
They've all got the same gun, but not quite the same ammo: the A3 gets APCR as an option, which is useful at times. They also have the same listed armor thickness, but not all the same armor - the A1 has the original cast mantlet, which has a complex shape and flatter areas, while the A2 and A3 have the simpler flat rolled plate.
There's also differences in the suspension, but I couldn't tell you what those amount to.
how can you progress in the tree if you don't buy the previous one if its connected?
M4A2 has a better hull then the A1 and its gun has great accuracy, it also has a nice top speed when you're on roads
M4A3 is the best of the 3, the HVSS allows it to move its top speed while off road which makes it one of the fastest Mediums in its BR range while off road
Just no. Those 3 shermans get progressively better in order. Gaijin has it right.
