Whats the difference between the three 76mm shermans?
There are three variants of M4 sherman tanks for US with 76mm gun in the main tree.

M4A1 (76) W, M4A2 (76) W and M4A3 (76) W

on first look it seems they are a downgrade with slower turret speed. And M4A3 actually has a downgraded engine leading to slowest movement speed.

The penetration and armor thickness of all three look the exact same , so why is the worst M4 at 5.3?

Gaijin works in mysterious ways, look at the Italian SPG line, Japanese medium tank line, and etc. Same ♥♥♥♥.

There are a few differences in the 3 shermans. I can't get in the game rn and my memory isn't the best so what I say might be incorrect. The A2 and A3 have a different hull that allows for better angling and have an additional 38mm square piece of armor on both sides of the tank. I think the A3 has a HVSS suspension system, though I don't know what it's useful for.

When I was researching the shermans, I didn't bother buying the A2 and A3 until I had an excess of SL. the A1 is probably the best of the 76 Sherman's imo.

Er, some of your things are wrong. They all have the same turret traverse. The A3 has the most powerful engine (the A2 has the least), though the A2 has the highest nominal top speed. Have you researched upgrades for some of the Shermans but not others, maybe? Or crews in some or all of them modifying their effective stats?

They've all got the same gun, but not quite the same ammo: the A3 gets APCR as an option, which is useful at times. They also have the same listed armor thickness, but not all the same armor - the A1 has the original cast mantlet, which has a complex shape and flatter areas, while the A2 and A3 have the simpler flat rolled plate.

There's also differences in the suspension, but I couldn't tell you what those amount to.

how can you progress in the tree if you don't buy the previous one if its connected?

You can still research the vehicles after the vehicle even if u didn't buy them. And I had a lot of sl from taking a break from the American ground tree and playing other countries.

Actually, it's 25.4mm plate and the A2 is the only one that gets it. It goes over where the ammo racks would be on the A2 75, which isn't very relevant on the (W) 76 types with their protected floor ammo storage.

M4A1 is the worst of the 3 its gun is also slightly less accurate for some reason

M4A2 has a better hull then the A1 and its gun has great accuracy, it also has a nice top speed when you're on roads

M4A3 is the best of the 3, the HVSS allows it to move its top speed while off road which makes it one of the fastest Mediums in its BR range while off road

Just no. Those 3 shermans get progressively better in order. Gaijin has it right.

A3 has HVSS as mentioned above, gives it the best mobility of any of the shermans in the game despite lesser engine power.
