so while the 30s do great against large predictable targets like bombers i prefer the 'less' effective 20mm as a general purpose weapon because they are easier to use in most situations
Go for the 20mm on the nose, bullet drop is further, more ammo, better fire control.
Personally i would add 20mm gun pods and keep the 30mm to the bf 109 nose so that it can be used both in bomber attack and dogfighting (I'm a bit overkill type of guy, because i expect to kill someone at first encounter, if it fails, i run away to regain energy rather than dogfighting). You must acknowledge that the gun pods can affect your agility (thought i find it not to a great extend).
I ran with 20mm for the start, decided to try out 30mm and never looked back since.
Once you get used to the 30mm- they're lethal.
