You mean when it selects a target because you fired at it while unselected?

How is it "Getting in the way?" I've been putting up with that for nigh on 2 years.

I'm not firing at the target when it locks on, and half the time I dont know I'm lock on until I zoom into a target that I do want and it flicks the cross hairs all the way behind me at some plane.

Well it's not doing it randomly. Maybe you have a bind interfering.

I didn't say it was random, seems more like it's locking on to the closest target or any target that comes in front on my crosshairs. Ever target is an aircraft as well. I've looked through the controll and interface options but hadn't found anything that seemed relevent in exception to the key for lock on

I've had this issue pop up from time to time albeit quite rare but when it does happen, it can cost an encounter. I just press X a few times for it to stop. Otherwise your best bet is to check options and the key configuration page thoroughly, if you're looking for an answer, you'll find it there.

I wonder why X worked

Its bound to shift.

Once you randomly zoom to somebody else just hit shift.

Change it in the controls. It is called tank:target tracking.

X is auto taretting. It's what's used to highlight enemies as you already know. Look at nothing and press and and they're unhighlighted

Oh mine is L, I gotcha now
I'm resurrecting this thread to mention that in Controls > Common > View Controls, Zoom is often set to Z and RMB. RMB is also set to Lock Target. So you should change one of those.
