assuming you mean barrel as your anecdote suggests what do you expect a shot meant to kill tanks to do to a relativly thin piece of steel? your cannons barrel is a long thin cylinder with little to no tollerance for imperfections when attempting to shove large pieces of metal down it at several times the speed of sound... you also took the risk by trying to fire with a damaged barrel rather than repair, in a desperate situation sure, that might have been worth the risk but never forget it is a risk you are taking and it often wont pan out.
also shooting the barrel of an enemy tank can occasionally be the only recourse of a tank that otherwise cant hurt its oponent or is facing imminent destruction itself, its a legitimate and useful tactic
oh and be thankful repairs are so fast nowadays...
