As for dealing with hills, try reversing up onto the hill, taking your shot, and then driving back into cover. You shouldn't be cresting hills unless you know there's only one enemy and he's not looking at you. If there isn't a hill behind you, change position or hold tight until the enemy crests and gives you a shot at their underside.
You want to be with others as well because if you fail to make a decent penetration, it can be the end for you. The armor is meh (unless using the 1944 model where it is a bit better) so do NOT try to use this as normal heavy and brawl as a frontal penetration will either result in an ammo racking, fire, or crew wipe.
Watch the enemy, wait for the right time to pop out and make the shot, back off after you fire (regardless of what happens) and do NOT go out on your own or try to brawl. It's not easy to use, but once you master it and are able to make good shots, it can make for an excellent heavy tank killer for your team.
As bush said, pop out and shoot and always have others backing you up if you're close to the enemy.
Once you shoot, if they're competant, they'll charge at you.
Tier V, there is ZSU-57-2 and IT-1 are waiting for you.
