Smoke grenades
How are some people firing them one at a time? If I hit G, it just fires the whole volley.

Some tanks mainly british ones only fire one at a time.

Depends on the tank and launcher. If they are external mounts, the launch will fire most or all at once. Others like Shermans, later German tanks, British tanks, etc. have pistol ports that were designed to fit a signal pistol for smoke and flares (and some small explosives).

/\ There, on my (German) Sherman, you can see a small hole on the far right, thats the signal pistol port to fire single smoke grenades out of.

/\ On my KPz-70, there is a rack like this with smoke grenades that fire multiple at once (the KPz-70 being an example where external launchers can launch more then once, 16 total, each push of the key launches 4 from each side).

Different vehicles fire different ways. Some have single, reloadable launchers while others have a multitude of oneshot launchers that fire in volley.

I think it was the Italian tank which detonates the smokegrenade on itself.

There are German PzIVs that do it too

The P40/26 has them mounted on the lower section of the rear hull so they just fire into the ground right below the rear of the tank.
