the indicator doesnt appear above 1km but the ranging indicators on the scope arnt there just for show and we shoot above 1km in RB and SB just fine (where maps permit). Once you get good at it it feels faster and more natural just to adjust your aim to estimated range and fire rather than look for the little cross

You have to adjust the Gunsight. Go into the controls menu and set some hotkeys for range finding and Gunsight adjustments.

1. Measure the distance to the target. Aim at the enemy and press the rangefinding key. It takes a few seconds to measure. crew skills affect the accuaracy.
2. Adjust the Gunsight to the proper range.

A terrible example.
So if you got a Tank that is 600 meters away. It looks like this, roughly through the gunsight.

200
-------- (300 meters)
400
-------- (500 meters)
600 (range of enemy tank)
--------(700 meters)
800

Now you aim at the tank part you want to hit and adjust the scope until the line is at the 600 meter mark.

You can hit something at that range. If the shot penetrates is the other question.

you can also use an external range finder

How?

I tried about 2500+m with a m60aos with pads. Most of it is rangefinder. The rangefinder isn't really accurate so about 2 to 3 shots to hit the target with the 1st being the ranging shot and the 2nd being the ranging or hit. Use high velocity ammo like apds or apfsds

Yea when you play tanks for a long time you can guess how far they are me it usually take 1 or 2 shot to hit my target without range finding for me I find it faster to simply estimate than using rangefinders because I don't really trust rangefinders I get more success with a simple estimation.
So as others say I know it's mean but get good look at your mini map it can also give you a estimation of how far your target is hit them with your machine gun just enough to get them to show on mini map and there you go you now have a general idea how far they are.

Pratice until you get used, then you can shoot without missing your targets, you need to learn the shell distances drops...
