StuH 42 G.... What ammo to use??
The "normal" APHE lacks a bit of OOMPH in penetration, but makes up for it with high killing power.

The HEAT shells though, penetrate easy enough, but I have a tough time getting the "money shot".

I know how to fire the APHE shell, but what is the trick withthe HEAT shell???

heat explodes on contact so you should have direct line of sight with the enemy with no obstacles blocking the view ( fences . treess.etc)
i tend to use a couple of aphe along with the heat shell for that extra pen

take aphe and the highest pen heat shel and aim at ammo racks and the centre mass of the tank with heat

I get Penetration with HEAT, but barely get any fragments inside.

still it can one shot pretty often due to the aphe having rather low pen at its br

I found that you need to hit the really flat areas with no spaced armor on a tank to reliably do damage, such as the front of most tanks without that extra plate. The front of the Cromwell's turret is a very good example of where you should aim. The flat part, not the turret itself.

I don't understand why Gaijin keeps adding vehicles that weren't intended to fight anything resembling a tank.
Or, for that matter, why the community keeps asking for more.

I follow your idea. But if it needs to work, then the Howitzers also need proper HE shells. In an emergency, Howitzers were used at AT weapons in WW2, even though they weren't meant for the job.

They debilitated the crew with concussive force, which allowed other units to kill the Tank.

i think russian doctrine of the war said any gun which could be brought to bear on a tank was a de-facto anti-tank gun

as to HEAT you know what the shell actually does OP? it detonates on the outside of your targets armour and projects a focused stream of supersonic copper which has been liquified by the detonation of the shaped charge. its esentially solid-shot by its effects and should be aimed at critical components like ammo to be effective

A weapon that can only theoretically act as an anti-tank gun in an emergency isn't an anti-tank gun. Plain and simple.

Self-propelled artillery and assault guns have no purpose in War Thunder outside of being AI targets.

Ahaaaaaa. See that was where I had it wrong. I got hung up on the HE part. I can work with that.

Don't forget those horrible Infantry support tanks like Matilda and Churchill I. I hope they don't add more of that rubbish in.

Those at least had anti-tank guns.

If you want to one-hit-kill, you need to aim at spots such as cupola with the HE shell.
With HEAT, as others said, you need a clean shot and have to aim for specific components.
APHE works on urban maps in which you camp a chockpoint.
All in all, a very frustrating TD.

It's not even a TD, it's an assault gun. It's meant for attacking pillboxes and machine gun positions, not tanks.

But there's no such classification in war thunder.
That's probably a hint that assault guns and self-propelled artillery shouldn't be in game, as they keep labeling them as TDs.
