The guns do ♥♥♥♥ tons of damage with stealth rounds. Of course its less durable then a Zero or a Ki-43: Its a biplane! And it doesnt overheat too fast at all, I can kill the plane before I start to overheat. It can climb to 2500m in no time with WEP, and shoot down any CAS or bombers that are high in the sky.
I tried to throw out techniques that have worked for me, and to point out that the aircraft isn't a ruler-of-the-skies. Plane is not broken, it's a flimsy biplane very suseptable to other aircraft, and is on the worse end of most performance comparisons to other reserves.
Have a buddy fly one out in a custom battle and try some maneuvers in different aircraft against it. I'm sure you'll have much more telling results there.
Because this is the steam forum, people don't come here to fix issues they come here to complain about them.
The I-15 isn't at the worse end of the performance spectrum either, it outperforms most of the other bi-planes entirely and the planes it doesn't completely outperform, it exceeds in other aspects which make it a superior aircraft overall.
Lets not even mention the fact that if you unlocked it before 1.37 (it was removed after that), you also have the glorious rocket chaika (https://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=I-153_M-62_Chaika) which not only outperforms every other biplane in pretty much every way, effectively flying in RB like a plane from AB, but also has armament capable of taking down large planes alongside those deadly deadly ShKAS.
You mean the one that's a full battle rating (2.0 vs I-15 at 1.0) higher and is slower than every aircraft it faces at 2.0? Of course it outperforms other reserves, that's why it's rated so much higher. It's still in the game too, it was not removed. The wiki page you linked states that it was made available prior to 1.37, not that it was removed after. The shKAS mgs overheat faster than any others in the game too, and blow through ammo. They're not the greatest tbh. The Chaika is a wonderful turn fighter, but that's all you have at 2.0 when buffalos and early 109s soar past you and climb higher than you, with better guns to boot.
Also I never said the I-15 was the worst performer, just that there are many counters to it, you don't have to believe me on that, but fly out the I-15 in RB, you'll see what I mean. In my opinion it is far from a superior aircraft, and it's fine if you think otherwise.
The I-153 is a bad example because of it's battle rating that's true. Similar to the cannon variant of the chaika in that respect. A better example is probably the I-15bis, which is also unavailable for accounts made post 1.37. It also carries rockets and bombs and has the 4 ShKAS machine guns (BR 1.3). The whole "guns overheat and plane overheats" argument is kind of a null point. The ShKAS overheat quickly but they have an incredibly high rate of fire as well as 760 rounds per gun which is more than enough. If you've played later Russian planes like the La-9 and MiG or Yak jets, the chaika's ammunition load almost seems excess to requirements. They shred canvas bi-planes as well.
You did say that the I-15 was though, which is the issue I have because it isn't true at all. It outclasses the other reserves in almost every way. The fact that there are variants of it with higher battle ratings, doing well in even 3.0 games should be testament to this.
I-15bis has same mgs as I-15s do. Source: I have it. Have checked. Also has the same bombs the normal I-15s have. Sure it has the rockets, but that'll get you maybe a single bomber kill or if you're reeeeally lucky, a fighter kill. It's still an I-15.
Yes, I said it's on the worse end performance-wise, and I was right about that, like I said if you think I was wrong that's your prerogative, and that's okay. I've fought against them and won with the same solutions I offered to OP, so I will continue to stand by it. As for the cannon Chaika, yes, if you put cannons on anything in WT, it'll do well, that's why it's 3.0. The gun improvement gives it a chance to fight at higher BR, where normally, due to flaws such as speed, lack of durability, etc. would spell doom for it right away. The cannons give it a fighting chance.
You're right about the ShKAS, it will shred camvas biplanes, but more rounds does not mean it'll do better. La-9 and the like do well because their cannons hit hard. A ShKAS at 2.0 will do well against 1.0 aircraft (duh), but don't get your hopes up against any bombers or all-metal fighters at the same BR.
