I guess it's to prevent people doing just that and coming to matches unprepared.
As much as I'd like to get to the top too with little effort put in, I don't want my team to lose because half the people are trying to quickly get the top and have only 1 good vehicle while the rest are too low of a br.
Albeit the japanse GF have this issue, it's not that bad.
Yes that's true, I think that it comes down to what vehicles you enjoy playing. I'm looking forward to most of the rank 2, 3, and 4 vehicles I'm planning to get, especially the ones that were well-known. Though getting to rank 5 would be an achievement.
Whether it's in WOT or here, I think it comes down to having fun in whatever. whether it's in tier 1 or tier 5. There's some vehicles in tier 1 that I've played over 300 battles but it doesn't take away the fact that at higher tiers, it's just as fun. The difference is that at a higher tier, you have more skilled players for the most part that push/flank harder on average and there's significantly higher repair costs so it can quickly eat away at your SL if you play poorly.
I have some Tier 4 premiums that have the highest potential earnings in the game, but I generally refuse to play them currently just because I'm actually having fun playing with the various M4's, Pz III M, Pz IV F2, all of the StuG's, etc. I like variety and the low "risk" of earlier tiers. People rush around, aggressive flanking has high rewards and low penalties. Win/win. If you really enjoy some vehicles at later tiers, their higher earning factors should make it pretty quick to get you whatever Tier 5.
If I'm still feeling like playing this game, I'll probably just keep jumping from nation to nation and spend most of my time unlocking new tanks as opposed to just playing the final tanks I unlock.
Back in WoT, I think I started by getting the IS-7 based on how "Russian-bias OPed" it was supposed to be, then I basically said "F this!" and had the most fun playing the "poor" German E-100 and later that French Foch 155 TD with the auto-loader. Meh, discovery is half the fun, and I totally agree that having a goal of unlocking something is probably my main driving force. If I unlock everything, odds are that I would eventually lose interest and move on to something else, pretty much how I did with WoT... that's probably why I like having to unlock a bunch of things along the way... I would do that anyway. haha!
I forgot to mention that not that many have access to the japan line so it doesn't matter for you yet.
So if your endgoal is to simply have fun, do what i did when I didn't have premium. Just go up to br 5.0 in every nation in ground forces. It's a relatively quick upgrade and you get to understand and experience the weaknesses and strengths of each tank.
Nail on the head, Sir!
That's the aspect that I find reduces the "fun" for me to a degree... much more pressure to do well, less room for mistakes, and generally less chance for me to run off and just *herpa-derp* around on my own behind the enemy lines in the hopes of getting the jump on 5 enemy tanks too busy to notice me bouncing shots with my tiny Japanese tank that has to be with-in 10 meter for any chance to puncture the cosmetic engine cover... but, it has happened, and it's satisfying as heck when it does! :)
I even had one match where I spent a good 10 minutes with another player and a tipped-over truck tethered and pushing it around in the hopes of getting it back up. Half the team were laughing their asses off because we did not stop pushing the truck around even when we were being ambushed... I simply turned my turret around in place, and popped both tanks (I think something like BT-5's or something trying to make it over a hill all sneaky-beaky-like) and continued pushing. The good news? We got the truck flipped back right-side-up as the match was ending, and we won! :D You do that in Tier 5 and you are out a bunch of repair costs, as you will probably be dead, and half the team will hate you for being that one jerk not taking it seriously. xD
... well, I say that, and I lost it on some poor noob on my team who was pushing me around half the match into enemy fire, but oh well. :X
I guess there is fun to be had at all tiers, as long as you enjoy the play style of a particular vehicle, or maybe want the competitive challenge that may be missing at lower tiers.
