76.2mm QF 17-pounder tips on its usage?
I switched back to using British tanks after several months playing as other nations and I am not doing so well with the solid shot ammo. All the tanks I’m using have the 76.2mm QF 17-pounder, what would be the best ammo type for it and how best to use it? As aiming for ammo racks doesn’t seem to always set them off (Note none of the tanks I’m using have Shot SV Mk.1).

The issue with having little to no explosives in your shells means you will have to snipe the crew members out, which can be simple or complicated depending on their placement in the tank. Always disable the gunner by shooting the to the left or right of the gun, (check for each nation, since gunner/loader change positions) then go for the rest of em.

Edit: You have like almost 2k hours, you should know how to tonk with british hardened biscuit shells!

Really each shell is best for different tank types. The stock shell is decent for dealing with tigers when aiming for the drivers port as it produces a fair amount of fragmentation and the APCBC round is better for dealing with T34s but the biggest issue you will face will be the panther as you just need to keep chipping away at the turret until you get sabot then just spam APDS all day

this gun is hard to use. been searching the forums on that topic to see what others think, but in BR 4.7 games with it there is 75% of shots are not penetrating anything. Most of the T34s and similar derivatives - shells bounce off - shermans and M4's, shells bounce off. I broadsided a jadgpanzer and it just shrugged, spun round and smashed me.

whats the big deal about this gun exactl/y? seems like almost any german or russian gun is better.

1st: holy necro batman.
2nd: The 17pdr kicks ass in all its forms. Your bounces sound like poorly aimed shots rather than anything wrong with the round itself.

To answer previous questions here. Mk 8 or Shot SV Mk1 is the round you want + some HE for really light targets.
And the only trick with the gun and round it it goes exactly where you put it, except at the longest ranges.

I just went and double checked. There isnt anything the 17pdr Mark 8 cant handle at 500m under 6.7.
Tiger II H and T-44 going to be the first tanks to really challenge the Mark 8 round. 2 BR above where the 17pdr comes in. The Comet and the Cent 1 being the only UK tanks that will usually run into them and they get Sabot with can handle both.

I will also concede that Jumbos can be a little tricky, but even they can be front penned.
IS can be front penned or turret cheeked.
T-34 same.
Panthers can be turret cheeked, though its trickier than the T-34s.
All medium Shermans can be front penned, or cheeked.

The beautiful thing about the 17pdr is it clean front pens things at ranges where they are not used to being penned. That Tiger that thinks its angled? Take its turret, take its mobility, kill it. That IS? Same thing. That Jumbo? Better to flank, but you can do it.

Then if you ever think you can't drop the gunner, take the barrel. You have the reload.

Ballistics used to behave differently in 2017.

Great. Good thing I wasnt referencing 2017. I was addressing Antiriad's necromancy.

Have you even read the steam forums rules? Why do you need to go back to oldest threads to answer them?

Because I Iook up the topic i want to discuss using the search function and sometimes the topic is an old thread. How is that necro? Doesnt everyone do that instead of starting a new thread?

Anyway - issue solved. I hadnt tabbed it onto mk8 and was using mk6 without realising I needed to select the uptiered shell. Better results with mk8. For a while I was going crazy there man, but then with the correct shell it all started to click...haha

Reviving a 5 year old thread is the definition of necro threading.

But I'm glad you got it figured. 17pdr is one of the best guns of that BR range.

No everyone does not do that cause that results in the thread being locked.

It's a "necro" because it is a dead thread. "Necro" basically means dead and that's what you're doing, you are currently commenting on a thread that should be dead
