Is there any update on whether multiplayer is in the works, at all? I know it wasn't planned during the time of your reply, but I didn't know if it has changed since then.
Would really be interested in playing co-op or multiplayer in a game like this -- which is pretty much exactly the type of game I'm looking for at the moment. :)
Ah ok, no problem.
Will wait for SG3 then I guess.
I totally understand and agree with the perspective of polishing and perfecting the Single Player experience but by not doing a Multiplayer component, there will be less sales of this game.
Think of it: one person, maybe a fan of Freelancer, buys this game and enjoys it. How is that person going to entice friends to also buy it when they can't play together?
Contrast with another scenario wherein multiple friends buying their own copy to play the game with each other.
What I'm saying is multiplayer guarantees more sales and single player only guarantees less sales. The successful funding of Star Citizen proves what people want and are willing to pay for in a game.
And honestly, I was very close to buying this until I read there was no multiplayer. As soon as I read that, I thought "oh well...maybe when it does have multiplayer." I play games not just because I enjoy the experience but I enjoy the experience with friends.
In a word, removing this from my wishlist and not going to buy it without multiplayer.
Respectfully, thanks anyways and sincere good luck!
The amount of extra sales from adding a multiplayer component at the current stage would be neglible, and quite probably not warranting the extra amount of developing/programming needed.
Imo not buying a game because it doesn't have multiplayer is just a way of losing out on great games..if I had thought like that I would have missed out on most of the best games in the last 30 years (yes I am 'that' old).
Besides, afaik the engine/game was from the get go not designed for multiplayer which again adds an entirely new set of problems if one should try to add such a component to it.
The wise thing to do would be to finish SPG2 as single player only and then make a new/improved engine for SPG3 with multiplayer options
Implementing/not-implementing MP is not, in our case, motivated by potential sales. Of course we'd like to have MP. Heck, we'd love to have it :). In our case, it's a matter of development. We have no or negligible experience in developing multiplayer. Add to that that we're a small team and that we still need to finish the game in some realistic time-frame so we continue to... erm... exist as developers :D... and what you get is a nice bucket of problems :S. What I'm saying is:
MP is definitely something we'd love to implement, but until we can be sure we actually can implement it in a quality and timely fashion, we're sticking to SP :).
Thanks for the interest in SG2!
Sad to hear that Multiplayer won't be making it into SPG2, but just wanted to add another voice saying I would love to co-op with my buddy in an expansion, or the next time around.
Keep up the awesome work! There are not enough folk who focus on awesome games like this! Give my best wishes to the team and all that! :3
Thanks man! We appreciate it :)
I can tell you that as soon as we'll be able to, we'll be implementing MP as a standard part of any of our games. We want it too :).
