Tell you what - try the reverse:
Take your gunship and go close range, flying between enemy ships, expecting to be very manoueverable. Get blown to hell.
Take you heavy ship and start kiting, timing your PTE and barrage, modding weapons if not for sustained fire, then for quick bursts of as much damage as possible before you PTE away. Suddenly... you are alive and well, enemy dies.
You know what you "normally" should realize? That gunships are useless and mean nothing. That heavy firepower means everything. That your gameplay means everything. And if you can't play it - don't pretend that kiting in small ship is all good and fun, while dying in a big ship is ugly and wrong. Don't embarrass yourself.
There is an engine enhancement: Hyperstream or something. It reduces PTE time by 50% on third tier. That already is enough to have reasonable PTE on heavy ships. There is "Mark target" option, which allows your FoW to take priority in it's auto-fire. And there is active pause, where you can easily reassign your equipment slots to fit the needs of your situation.
There are your tips.
No heavy weapons used.
No skills used
No items used.
I have some perks.
I used the default gunship, weapons, etc.
Fire at will on (beams).
Ship: Squire
Tactic: Keep rotating the highest shield to their side, that way the damaged shields can recover.
As for low firepower... It just takes longer. Shields have very low recharge rate. While starting weapon Isis is pretty heavy.
With the current AI's lack of options and decisions (which we'll increase in the very near future) I'm confident experienced captains could do some serious damage with positioning alone.
If Sun Tzu were playing SPG2 he would agree with you :)
reminds me of space rangers when you try to become #1 by killing all the other rangers. Some crazy guy did it using nothing but missiles and well timed transfactor beacon usage (calls in dominators).
But back on topic, how long does it take you to do that?
I have all the space rangers games. I don't think it's even possible to kill off all the rangers, because just like the pirates, they run when outgunned or damaged a lot.
Not that I've tried. >..> *cough*

It took a while, over 30 minutes...
They all "respawn" (new ranger with new equipment and exp) but they don't replace the #1. So if you keep killing the next #1 until you are #1....
As for beam guns. I love the beam guns. You never miss and that counts because you WILL do damage as opposed to hopefully do damage. I've had entire minutes of railgun fire miss. It doesn't miss if I let the computer fire though.
