I'm finishing chapter 4 and hes, by far, the hardest boss of the game until now, even harder than the famed yin tiger.
was i supposed to have some kind of item to be able to actually win this guy? that explains a lot lmao.
yeah bro you were playing on hard mode.
hes way easier with the vessel
Wait till you get to Yellow Loong secret boss in chapter 4 lol. As for chapter 3 end boss, if you get the wind tamer it’ll help you significantly at least phase
This + the wind tame and it is an extremely easy fight.
When he goes into form, he is easy to dodge, etc.
Third, he throws down spear - use the special you picked up from quest to dispel his sand storm. If you reach a point he goes to sides behind the sand wall - you can draw him out by backing up, he will come to close the gap.
Use focus med. Focus lets you get a few hits, then bonk when they go to attack. You need at least one to counter them. It helps a lot.
Cool bossfight - I opted to beat him with the rock solid spell since I just like how it feels and it took me about 3 hours. Having bosses hit my rocky head over and over and fall over for punishment is my favourite thing in this game.
I do think there are three things wrong with the fight, though, which detracted from my enjoyment.
Firstly, he is just too tanky and the fight goes on for too long. I would personally reduce his HP by 10-20%. You would still absolutely have to learn the fight to beat it, but it would be less of an ordeal to redo if you, like me, kept wiping on the last 15%.
Secondly, his kick-grapple move has an audible cue where he grunts, but it is inconsistent and sometimes just seems to come out with very little forewarning. That may be due to overlapping wind noises in his arena, but it is extremely annoying for such a high-damage move to be that hard to read. I consider this his only BS move - the giant falling bug is hard to dodge, but I just rock solid my way through it, so it's usually a non-issue.
Thirdly, the sandstorm obscuring everything made the anti-wind vessel a necessity for me. Not only did it help a great deal in getting down that last 15%, but without it I couldn't see what he was doing half the time and also prevented me from closing the distance if he was standing in the whirling sands surrounding the arena.
With there being no clues pointing towards an anti-boss item existing, I am uncharitably reminded of the Mohg bossfight in Elden Ring requiring a specific potion upgrade you had absolutely no chance of guessing the location of without spoilering it. Just like Mohg, I doubt I could have beaten this fight without it, and I consider that to be very poor boss design.
All in all, however, I consider this to be an enjoyable boss and by far the most challenging I've come across so far. Now I gotta go back and find all the stuff in chapter 2 I missed.
Was I underleveled for this fight, by the way? Felt a bit like that. I was level 37 or 38 when I faced the sage.
