Is it possible to change an items light value?
Forum search didn't help, google couldn't tell, the only mods I found were regarding color, and checking the item in the FCS didn't show any light value stats, so I guess the answer is propably no, but since I am a total modding noob and might aswell have missed it, or looked at the wrong place, I thought I better make sure and ask the pros.

Another way to find it is open a backpack and in the drop down choose physics attachments and add a lantern, then replace with copy etc.
I've made alot of different lights for buildings/bags/beltslots and the variety you can achieve is nice, there are even things like pulse and shimmer that will affect the flow of light.
Happy to help if you get stuck~

from what i can see in the FCS and light source attachments
i will have to go with no for now. even though you can change the light color for pack-beasts and the like, there is no option in other categories to add the data.

yeah, I thought as much, thanks for taking a look to clarify anyway. Much appreciated.

When you say change light value, are you talking about changing brightness/radius of light or adding light to a furniture?

The former is easy, just like what you've seen done in those light color mod.

The latter require some tinkering. The workaround that I've found is to duplicate a furniture with light properties (campfire for example) and change everything in the duplicate to be the same as whatever furniture you want to have that light property.

As an example if you want the throne or a chair to give light, just copy everything (within reason) from that piece of furniture into your campfire duplicate. Do it manually. Just leave "lights" (1 | campfire light) alone or customize a duplicate of it if you know what you're doing.

If you're talking about making an item or armor piece give off light like lantern of radiance, I have never tried that before. My suggestion is to look into lantern of radiance and study it.

FCS: Building - Lights - (light source item) brightness

Those light source items are referenced by the "parts" of light armature items under Furniture.

For instance: Furniture - Ceiling Lamp - parts - lights - indoor_lamp_light

I am actually talking about a lantern of radiance like item indeed. Guess I need to take a second look then.

In that case, it may be possible. The only question is how far are you willing to go to look into it. Just because it has never been done before doesn't necessarily means it can't be done.

For example the overall consensus among modders is that it is impossible for player faction to own slaves. For years everyone is saying it can't be done. But one of the modders, stilldoll has proven everyone wrong. It can be done. But I couldn't imagine how long it took him to figure out how to make it work.

It may not be impossible but it may also not be easy. You'll never know if you don't try. Whether or not it is worth it is another matter. The least you can do is learn from the experience. :D

Well, I have no idea what I'm doing, but that won't keep me from trying. I propably have to look up some guides first though, the farthest I got into modding was opening fcs and look at the lantern. :D

Ok, I think I managed to achieve what I wanted in the item editor. I made a copy of the hip lantern, wich I guess is the lantern of radiance.
I renamed it and changed the value to my liking, now, how do I actually get it in the game? Since I didn't tinker with anything but the light value, will the new item automatically be sold by hive merchants that sell the lantern of radiance aswell?
Howls@TheMoon Jan 23, 2019 @ 12:49am
It will not automatically appear, you have to add it to a vendor list. A good idea to test it is add it to a vendor in a town like the hub where you can do a quick new game start to test if it works like you want. Start with the town you want, then find the shop (resident) you want on that towns sheet, and on that residents squad sheet you will see the vendor list.

If you add that light as a physics attachment on a backpack you can just add that bag to a character for a game start to test it and adjust to your liking abit faster.
With belt attachment lanterns though i've never been able to have them appear on a character with a game start.
If your testing it with an existing game you should import to test it or the item may likely not show up at the shop you wanted.

great, thanks, another thing though, I just started a new game and browsed through the active mods but the new one I created didn't show up, any idea why this could happen? is that maybe a sign that the changes I tried do not work within the games possibilities?
Howls@TheMoon Jan 23, 2019 @ 12:59am
I don't think so, sorry i can't help with that one but it may be that it is saved in the wrong location.
I've seen other postings of people having mods not show up and the answer is usually the mod or game being saved in the wrong place, i guess? good luck~
