I suggest you make a mix of Hiver Villages (along southern big river) and Holy Nation towns.
But there isn't any trade route defined yet.
The trader backpack can put trade goods into stacks when they don't stack in your regular inventory. However they reduce your combat stats by 5 and slow down your attack speed. An alternative is a domestic bull wearing a backpack. You talk to the merchant with a humanoid and during the shop screen you click on the bull's icon down below and the bull can actually buy and sell.
Speaking of bars, they're open all day so if you show up in town at night you can sell your trade goods to bartenders.
Train your followers attack skill on mkIII training Dummies, npc Dummies can be found in barracks, make sure the door to the barracks is marked 'public', NOT 'private'. I think a mkIII can increase a skill up to 15. Then start fighting.
