How to stop people from running to get food? SOLVED
Solution: Putting the food in a bag then putting the bag in the container seems to work. I guess they can't smell it that way.

I'm having problems with characters just taking off for a building to get food from inside it if we get inside the area the building is in. I stuck a building to the North of a Hive outside the blue and when I took off for a run through the Hives, I came out of the first shop and two of my guys had taken off to go get food even though 2 in the squad had it in backpacks. Every time I call them back they just take off running again and get into fights with gorillas.

This behavior shows up from time top time even if you have hunger turned off.
Two things you can try: place food in everyone's inventory and with food in everyone's inventory, turn hunger back on long enough so hungry characters eat something and the hunger bar rises.
Do this even if no one looks hungry.

Problem is, they seem to run for the barrels both if they're low enough they need to eat now, and if they're roughly 200-250 they will also look for something in storage to put in their inventory. It's handy when you're hanging around a base but not when you're out in formation in places where that kind of thing agros 50 mobs that won't stop when you're dead and will eat every single body you have. It's a full-wipe, no coming back situation in a good chunk of the map.

The mod only removes the degeneration of hunger. It does not remove the AI for eating. That means so long as they are under 250, you will have to deal with this behavior.

If you want to void your self of this issue, turn the hunger mod off, Feed everyone to above 250, and then turn it back on.

I think I'm just going to not store food anyplace but my main base and places on the outer edges of the map. Then I won't get surprised so often when I'm in the middle of a march and see a red icon and find out someone took off a minute and a half ago, aggro'd a family of beak things and then stopped in their tracks.

A much better long term solution is doing as I've said. You'll never have to worry about it again, unless you recruit someone with a low hunger bar :)

Anyone above 250 hunger will never go looking for food. It's writtin the AI that once they drop below that, is when they do. Get them all above 250, then turn on the nohunger mod, and you're set forever.

Yeah I'm just trying to avoid using the hunger mod. It was on when I first started playing and the game went from really hard to really easy after I dropped the first farm.

Hey, i'm all for not using that mod aswell. I just respect people's individual playstyles, trying to help where I can :)

THough that being said... I have to wonder if i made the mistake of assuming you were using it...

Nope. I deactivated it as soon as I realized it was enabled. For the first couple of hours I just thought it took a lot of time for hunger to go down or something. Felt kind of cheap when I realized I was running around worrying about food that whole time when it wasn't even degenerating.

If you have a huge group the mod is a blessing and the only way to go, otherwise you will usee all your time producing and eating food.
the only mod i am using.

Maybe later I'll get into it. I'm at 125 hours now and still don't feel annoyed by food yet. Usually I hate food mechanics because they're a cheap way to put pressure on the player in a survival experience. But Kenshi has so much else going for it that it doesn't feel so cheap here. Right now the only thing keeping me from being able to move my base somewhere more remote that is closer to the higher value loot areas is lack of access to hydroponics tech. With the no hunger mod enabled I would have already had the entire base moved already and would probably be running out of things to do.

if you have up to 10 characters this is even funny, but with 20+ this is a nightmare and boring over time.

It would suck to manually manage all of them, yes. I like the automated sort of behavior for most of the drones, it's just very inconvenient for the combat characters that you want to stay together. It would be nice to have a toggle for that behavior, even it were tied to the Chase option or something. Like a command mode or something that forces them not to take off on their own for anything. But other than that, I really don't have a lot of problems with it. Grub is our food-bearer and carries around a pack with cloth for beds and food to both feed us on the run and attract fights to increase our skills. I mostly keep him and the medic on passive/block and it works pretty well. I usually don't worry much about food when we're out and about unless they take off running because they don't have their own piece of food in their backpack for later.

What woukd be bice would be to allow the members of your group to pick food from a friend or a pack animal.
so consideribng bulls like a mobile countainers. your characters would pick anything off a bull, food, building materials etc.
