Trees disappearing?
So I migrated my army to practically the other side of the map to build a nice outpost after outgrowing my starter one.

Settling in Okrans valley because of the nice scenery only to load in after construction to have all the trees within my walls disappear? If I wanted bland flat landscape I wouldn't have moved.

Is this normal? Can I prevent it? Can I get them back?

Yes. All kinds of vegetation (grass, bushes, trees) and even some scenery rocks get removed inside your settlement. OR rather: when you place a building, there's a radius around it that gets cleared.
But you're in luck:

There are some mounds/hills inside my settlement I would like to clear. Too bad it's not possible.

Were you able to get everything back? Had a long night where I built a base before realizing trees remove and don't want to reload.

Can't find anything in there where you can add trees. Only to remove. I want to add trees without modding and importing which ruins my playthrough.

You can download any workshop mod for Kenshi using Steam CMD. Certainly more involved than just using the workshop or Nexus, but it's doable.

Thank you I just saw a similar utube video and will try, though some comments there say it stopped working.

It won't work for many games, as it requires a setting to be toggled by the devs to allow public downloads. But, the Kenshi devs did so, so it should work fine. :)

Yes! Thank you for the Kenshi guide, very clear steps.
I tried to follow the SteamCMD instructions page but was thick as mud...

FYI, I posted earlier at nexus in Reaction World comments, so please feel free to ignore now that you helped here. Again many thanks from GOG players.

Thank you. These boulders were keeping me safe from beak things and such. When they disappeared a bunch of holes showed up in my wall and I was immediately eaten.
