Are there limited people in the world?

Particularly, squad-mate candidates? I've noticed that the bars never seem to refill... although it might be a big world, is there a limited number of potential candidates or do some events begin happening at some point involving random generation of possible companions?

Yes and no. Vanilla Kenshi has a limited number of potential recruits, but recruited NPC's will respawn when a save is imported.

There are also a number of mods in the workshop that add more recruits, as well as one that allows recruitment of prisoners (Helloooo High Paladins).

bar recruits are limited
but you have a endless supply of slaves you can buy or free

*non unique recruits respawn. Unique ones do not respawn if recruited (which is kind of a shame, imagine the chaotic fun of a group of 5 or so Beeps).

Slaves! free slaves and they have a roughly 25 percent chance to join you i've built a whole playthrough on building a slave army never had to pay for a recuit yet and that includes bandits that get put in police stations aswell

Can you *create* slaves as well? Rather than buy mercenaries, or rescue slaves, actually force people to serve you?

used to have a mod that did that but game updates axed it a.i dont quite work the same i think the mod paradise falls slaver edition might have the feature but last i checked it annoyed me how every character in your squad was constantly enslaveing and picking up slaves with no way to stop them

i managed to get leader a.i to enslave characters and not the whole squad but cuddnt get the enslaved's a.i to work i.e follow me fight for me work the feilds etc they would just stand around doing nothing or go into leggit mode haha
