It's even funnier when you have skeletons with replacement limbs that burn, but the skeleton's head, chest, and stomach is ok.
Also, it's not so much that they're turned off at night as it is that they're solar powered, reflecting the sunlight down to the surface, possibly for terraforming, maybe for power generation. Or they were always intended as weapons. No one really knows.
@Erei: correct. You can activate skybeams in Holy Nation lands or anywhere else you don't like, and have fun watching them get torched :3
Look at it this way, the laser is heating up your robot arm and burning the crap out of where it connects to your body
