Do backpacks despawn?
I was in a fight that was going the wrong way so I threw my heavy backpack on the ground and ran away.
Later I came back to collect it but couldn't find it anymore.

They didn't a little while ago, seems to have started doing it recently.

This is qwerky trading backpacks to people causes them to vanish. If you drop the backpack on the ground and they pick it up it wont vanish.

It's not trading backpacks, it's dropping them on the floor and going away for 10 minutes or so and returning to find no backpacks.

I dropped mine at my mining outpost next to the ore storage so I knew exactly where they were (or should have been). Once the BoBones got tired of chasing me I returned (10 minutes at most) and the packs had disappeared.
If you unload the area then yes they will.

When an area gets unloaded it will despawn the items on the ground. I'd guess you simply got too far.

Yeah, i had an inkling that is what might have happened. Did it again an hour ago with a bag of posh loot but kept the camera centred on the bag just to be sure it didn't go poof.
what a fun feature. my city is right on the edge of where the map has to reload to the next city over, and i lost over 100,000 cats worth of books (that really cant even be purchased since most were science books or better) in the middle of a fight!

Lovely lovely stuff. All the books despawned as well, i had even looked for the backpack within 2 mins of the fight ending.

C'est La Vie I guess,

But bump this still being a "known issue" in 2023

(am only 99 days in, on my first playthrough ever. so something like this is a huge huge huge kick to the nuts where i thought i was exceling quite nicely at this Title)

Could always go back in a save, right??? Or, be gungho and roleplay that they were stolen, or something... Up to you, if you are complaining "what a fun feature" no sense in doing so, you have options.

Or think of it, like someone found it and took it, because you would do either. :steamhappy:

Unfortunately this 'feature' was a must back when this game first launched, cause the memory on computers was limited. Nowadays people have enough to have multiple items litter the scene. Best to load an earlier save, where you still had those books. Or, you can import your save and raid those labs again.
every loose item despawn's once you leave far enough away. this declutters the games files and helps keep performance up.

How have I never encountered this before in my life? I leave all my crap in Hub (i forgot the name lol) on the floor of my building in nice piles and I come back and it's still there even if I've gone to the desert for example. I'll start storing my stuff in containers but holy crap I'm glad this never happened to me before I would literally cry lmfaoooooooooo

maybe dont leave stuff you want to keep on the floor like an animal?

Do you have several characters? It is enough if one of them is in the region where the hub is so it never despawns.
I once left an umbrella before I went into a soccer game by the road in a bush. It wasn't there when I got back. Ya think anyone coming through isn't going to steal it the moment they see it? Or maybe it just disappearing?
