You can only sell medicines and some material (cloths/metal plate etc) in place with npc that buy so in factions town mostly. you can spot if the npc have spawned in a town (they live here most of the time) really easily buy watching the city shop gaining money or npc saying they don't have money or are not interested.
They also are pretty limited to what amount of money they carry each day.

Thanks for the info. So, dose food count as a trade item or should I just go for Grog?
most food counts.
just look at the items. it will have more price values. those will be trade goods.

Food and Alcohol are generally the best sellers, and then medical items after that. There's also the various crafted items like Iron Plates, Building Materials, Steelbars, Armour Plating, Copper Plates, etc.

But again, it doesn't really work right now. Generally speaking the AI mostly ignores the player's shops. Been this way for a while now ever since they tweaked the AI regarding it.

I had a super good store one time in one save game, moving food, drugs and med supplies like crazy. Sometimes jugs of sake or other stuff would sell also.
Had trouble keeping stocked it sold so fast

I have set up a shop in Mongrel and put on sale many items with all the goods mentions here (food, alcohol, raw materials, etc..) and also, there are lots and lots of AI swarming on my store... but the thing is, there does'nt seem to have any transaction going on in my store.. not a single item were sold, no money is moving in to my account.. and it has been like this for the entire time i was playing kenshi... and when you click on an NPC, it says in their goal that they are "shopping".... i wonder what seems to be the problem?

I'm having the same issue, I have food and alcohol for sale but they just stand around crowding by shop counter.

.... on the upside I have between 20 - 30 geared traders from multiple factions standing around to defend against the raids

well i am not feeling the RPG essence this way and it really pisses me off. I started as a stationary trader by the way.. and i have nothing else to do beside selling....

It's almost a new year. Are shops working properly now?

I think there are some mods to make them more viable. You won't be selling millions of weapons though.
