Ye, just shift+click the "medic" button under the job list and it'll assign as a job (bonus: stays functional even when jobs are disabled)

Here's another trick to add on to above: when you have an opportunity to splint a wounded limb, shift + click 'splint injuries' on the character tab to make it a job. That way, after your medic patches up all teammates, they will automatically give splints to anyone who needs it.

and, if you have a robotics med kit in your inventory it will also add robotics to your guys job list so they auto-repair any skeletons or people with robotic limbs.

To save time, you can select all your guys and assign the job using one guy which will give all those selected the job too.

Is there a way to do this so you only heal your squad? I want to be able to leave the medic job on without my squad running to heal fallen neutral NPCs. I have even had them heal enemies who fell in combat once or twice...
check the AI control tab.

I only have "heal allies" selected in the AI tab. No option for "heal anyone"

They don't heal neutrals or enemies (unless captives) automatically in vanilla. And only allies if the option is ticked.

If your people are, you have mod making it happen.

I do have several mods, but I can't think of any that change game mechanics like that. The most I have for game mechanics is 3x slots. Most of mine add cosmetic stuff like extra eyes or hair, or fix clothing clipping, or are mods like bounties galore, recruitable prisoners, or your reactive worlds.

I do have the menders mod. It adds NPCs that heal anyone...maybe it's doing it? I know you can't be an encyclopedia on what mods do or cause what, I am mostly just thinking out loud...

What happened was I got jumped by UC Heros and, when I was over there looting them, my healer started patching up one of them. I also had them running over to heal a manhunter once too. Doesn't seem to be every time, or even the entire group. Had it happen once with escaped slaves too. But I suspect that they became a sort of temp ally when I removed their shackles, because I had the option to pick them up rather than kidnapping them.

That does sound like your probable culprit. I don't think it's possible to add that behaviour to "just" a group of added NPCs.

Freeing prisoners does turn them into allies. It's a weird sort of override that applies even if you're hostile to their faction. I'm pretty certain that this would still never trigger autoheal on those NPCs in vanilla, though: as Shidan says, that should only ever happen with captives.

Turn this off and they will only heal the members of your party. With it on they will heal anyone you are friendly with.

I had that on because I wanted to heal people I was friendly with. My issue was the 2 times they healed people I wasn't friendly with.
