But some things like the swamp I dont remember if they have a map. Nor do I remember where they were found, probally a general store.

I don't think itll bother new players to much, I can't imagine people being that surprised by the size of Morrowinds map for example which looks just about as big.

Do I have to do something specific to make a town icon appear on my map?
Market ive never heard of, maybe... you are talking about the slave markets?
Icons should appear on your map when you get a bit away from the location, then as you get close, you will get a message saying 'you have found xxxxxx' or something like that.
Furthermore no map locations are revealed except my starting town. I dunno if more should be revealed or not but I do know that, no matter where I go in a settlement, their name does not get marked in my map.
The icons should be appearing on your map then staying there once you move away
