Even Walls Won't Stop River Raptors From Eating My Crops
Pls Halp.

I walled in a large area with a gate, and they just bust down the gate and march right in in a massive herd. They then proceed to devour ALL of my crops.

I CANNOT stop them. My men aren't strong enough, and I can't aggro them all the way back to the nearby city to get killed, because they just stop following me and go back for some more easy food.

Any advice?

move,
since your people are not strong enough.
or add turrets.
or stay and fight. and gain toughness and weapons skills.

I guess I was just wondering if there was any alternative way of keeping them out, but if there isn't, I'll just deal with it until I have stronger people. I'll probably eventually have to move anyway, though, as the constant interruption is going to get irritating.

EDIT: On a related note, doesn't it seem a bit odd that mindless beasts will actually BREAK DOWN an iron/steel/whatever gate just to eat crops? Seems to make more sense for them to come in when the gate's been left open. Also, thanks anyway :)

the only better way is redesigning your walls and gate locations to add kill zones for your turrets.
also look to see if its nests. if it is, you can eventually go out and kill them reducing the numbers flooding into your base

edit
it was added in v0.95.10 since they didn't do anything but gather at the gates and clog them.
and you haven't watched zombie movies?? you put enough force behind anything and it will break.

How would I check for nests, if you don't mind me asking? And I don't have turrets yet, but that's a good idea!

Thanks in advance
A paw print shows on your map. that's a nest. if you don't see any, go outside and look around. you get close enough and it will show on your map.

Honestly, it's hard to start a colony with only a few people. You can eventually get it done (lots of losing fights and getting stronger) but it's probably better to build up a decent squad first. Sheer numbers and a little bit of gear will let you take care of them. Levels/experience also help but you have to be WAY better than your opponents if they outnumber you

I lost my save during the 95.9 crazyness, after I rebuild my base I'll post a screenshot of how my gate system is set up. I love building there, good area to make biofuel for generators.

Yes, please do! I'd appreciate it.

The trick to occupying that area is to build walls and a gate with a specific design so people on the walls have a better angle to the outside of the gate. The 4 crossbows, 2 on each side of the wall outcroppings facing the outside of the gate will c lear any and all that come.

After the first hoard is gone they dont come as often due to all their nests getting wiped out in that hoard.

On freedom seekers you can base up down there right away if you spend all your money on food and get building mat production rolling fast and iron plates. Then build the crossbows, lock the gate, set up the defenders and THEN build your crops.

As Warboy said, you need to get the walls up and turrets, before building any crops. You've also got to have the numbers early on to defend and man the turrets. Also when the raptors come, make sure to have your engineers REPAIR the gate while they attack it, so it gives more time for you to kill them with your turret defenders.

Another method of aiding in defense is recruiting mercenaries from bars. Not the kind that join your team, but the skilled mercenary groups that hang around bars that can be hired for a few thousand for a few days. It's not a cheap method, but if you have the money, it's a convenient way to defend a base, as you don't really have to care about them.

I'm not entirely sure how they will engage in the raptors initially, but if you do get hostile with the raptors, they will join in to help you.

A Noob question, how does farming actually work, i assume i need research done to a certain level and to have seeds although i remember reading i needed Greenfruit which from my brief revist was just an ediable food?

If some one would be so find as to explain the process of farming i would be truly appreaciative. Thank you

You need a number of the item you're going to plant in order to research the farm of that crop type, but you also need a number of that crop type to plant the crop itself.
For example, you will need a number of greenfruit to research greenfruit farming, but then you will need again, a number of greenfruit to actually plant the crop.

Repeat this for all plantable crop types. There are no seeds in Kenshi.

Ah gotcha, what are the options for farmnig in Kenshi, i know you can do Straw and Wheat to make bread and the Greenfruist, not sure what else there is?
