How to play CO-OP with a friend?
Whenever I start a server and give my IP to my friend, he can't see the server on his server list. Can someone help me?

open console ingame by pressing ~ key and type connect "server ip" then press enter.
connect 54.32.173.167:27910 for example
Savvy 21 AGO 2013 a las 22:10
If you are on the same LAN, it uses UDP broadcasting to detect other servers. Otherwise you need to obtain your public IP address (like searching "ip address" on Google) and give that to him. If you are behind a residential router, port forward UDP port 27910 to the same port on your computer's private IP address (e.g. 192.168.x.y).

I searched my public IP but it didn't work. He said that the game says "connecting to IP" and nothing happens. How do I port forward? Isn't that dangerous to my connection or something?

Hey, XAN.
I wasn't able to make a server for a long long time, but I've found this thread a half year ago and now I'm able to make one.

1. Go to this site to see your PC's IP address.

http://www.whatismyip.com/

2. Then read this topic :

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1616991

To help you, the following names are the config file name fo the maps, cause if you wanna continue your game later, you'll have to change the last line in your config from "map base1" to anything else, like if you want to continue from Ammo Depot which filename is bunk1.bsp, you just change "map base1" to "map bunk1" and save and overwrite it.

Outer Base base1.bsp
Installation base2.bsp
Comm Center base3.bsp
Lost Station train.bsp
Ammo Depot bunk1.bsp
Supply Station ware1.bsp
Warehouse ware2.bsp
Main Gate jail1.bsp
Destination Center jail2.bsp
Security Complex jail3.bsp
Torture Chambers jail4.bsp
Guard House jail5.asp
Grid Control security.bsp
Mine Entrance mintro.asp
Upper Mines mine1.bsp
Borehole mine2.bsp
Drilling Area mine3.bsp
Lower Mines mine4.bsp
Receiving Center fact1.bsp
Sudden Death fact3.bsp
Processing Plant fact2.bsp
Power Plant power1.bsp
The Reactor power2.bsp
Cooling Facility cool1.bsp
Toxic Waste Dump waste1.bsp
Pumping Station 1 waste2.bsp
Pumping Station 2 waste3.bsp
Big Gun biggun.bsp
Outer Hangar hangar1.bsp
Comm Satelite space.bsp
Research Lab lab.bsp
Inner Hangar hangar2.bsp
Launch Command command.bsp
Outlands strike.bsp
Outer Courts city1.bsp
Lower Palace city2.bsp
Upper Palace city3.bsp
Inner Chamber boss1.bsp
Final Showdown boss2.bsp

And in the config, the difficulty was for me like set skill 0 was Easy, set skill 1 was Normal and set skill 2 was Hard, and not Normal like the guys says.
But you can check the difficulty if your bring up your status screen in-game. That's how I found out that set skill 2 was Hard.
At the set hostname line, write something after it and put it between ' " '-s.
Like me. My name is Tom and I'm playing usually with my other friend cllled Tom as well, so the first line of my config file is :

set hostname "Slaughterhouse of Toms"
set coop 1
set deatmatch 0
set skill 1
...
and so on and so on, like the topic says.

3. Follow what the guy says, then watch this youtube-video :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H9tBsCeGJI

You just start your server batch-file, add your ip address to the address book and ask your friend to click on Refresh Server List, your server pops up and you're done. If it does not pop up for him, ask him to add your IP number to his address book as well and then it should be there.

And you have to use the same model as your coop partner or there will be blood and friendly fire. So watch out for that !
Before you start your Quake 2 Server by the batch file, you should change your character and ask tell your friend which model are you using and THEN start your server.

You have to be a bit tactical and not shooting at everything that moves, it will be like Left 4 Dead. But you have to be just a BIT tactical. Plus it spices up the game experience a bit.

I hope this helps you.
Have a great autumn, a wonderful year and goodbye.

You don't have to do that port forwarding thing or anything really special, just follow the guide, I was able to make a server in half an hour. Of course, use a TeamSpeak, Ventrillo, Mumble server, or Skype to be able to test this server thing much much faster and to have immediate feedback form your friend.

If your friend still cannot join you, stay on your server, do not exti the game and ask him to bring down the in-game console which can be done with the ' 0 ' or ' ~ ' and ask him to type "connect ip INSERT YOUR IP ADDRESS HERE " and press the Enter button.

I really hope that you will be able to play this fatastic game with these instructions.
Good luck and I wish you a wonderful coop fun.
Goodbye.

i think i have a server set up but im am not in game, just a comand prompt with sending heartbeats to "ip names" how can i play every time i try it says game already runing. plz help.
Hut Kai 22 DIC 2014 a las 22:40
Hey, Card Lock.

Start by finding the manufacturer and the name of your router (just pick your router and search for these data on the bottom of the router), then select Quake 2 from the list on the right and choose your router manufacturer and the exact type of the device on this site and it will show exactly what you have to do to be able to run Quake 2 in co-op :

http://portforward.com/cports.htm

Then try to ask your friend(s) to launch Quake 2, let them enter their game (they start NEW GAME or LOAD GAME and enter the game), and tell them to connect to you by your IP address.
I hope this helps. I was able to play after using this page and selecting my router manufacturer and type correctly.

PS : I suppose if you've already searched for Quake 2 coop and you are on these forums, then you've already searched for it and found it, but this page is helping you tremendously to set up your server.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1616991 (Just change the server name (set hostname) and difficulty (set skill 0 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 ) to your liking and you'll be golden!)

Config file
set hostname "Co-Op Server" set coop 1 set deathmatch 0 set skill 2 set dmflags 5520 map base1

The "map" line can be changed to any valid map name if you want to start on a differrent map.
There is no need for the list of maps at the bottom of the file.

"+connect IP.OF.SOMEONE.NUMBERS" and "+exec co_op.cfg" are client/server options such that you use "+connect IP address" to connect to a different server and "+exec filename.cfg" is used to specify server options and start a new server with those options.
Butane 31 JUL 2015 a las 20:21
Do NOT set DMFLAGS to 5520. It will crash your game/server at random times. I used to run a dedicated Q2 coop server and sometimes still do when I feel like playing the campaign.

This is my servercoop.cfg file which i place in BASEQ2 folder:
set hostname "The Gravel Pit | Quake 2 coop" set game baseq2 set deathmatch 0 set coop 1 set skill 3 set maxclients 8 //set dmflags 5520 set dmflags 16384 set logfile 3 set public 1 setmaster q2master.planetquake.com setmaster gameaholic.com setmaster master.quakeservers.net setmaster netdome.biz setmaster master.q2servers.com setmaster master1.qtracker.com:27901 map base1
Then I launch the game with: quake2.exe +set dedicated 1 +exec servercoop.cfg

I use the source port R1Q2 to host the game because it allows me to save and load multiplayer coop games. I'm not sure if the other ports support that.

I know this thread is ancient. But how do you save co-op progress on a dedicated server with R1Q2?

EDIT. Oh nvm, figured it out.

Shouldnt be big issues nowadays to port forward and direct-IP connection (well, if game didnt use IPX-IP)...
To make it a little bit easier and clear to find out is there is some issues between connection - RadminVPN (separate app from Radmin) or GameRanger
http://www.gameranger.com/about/
Decptie GR is very old and good, RadminVPN is better (less tech issues, more easy)

But both do emulate LAN network. You need internal GameRanger or Radmin IP adress put in the game.

was'nt this what Game Spy was for back then ?

gamespy and dozens else. Not only as part of the games but as 3rd party clients never mentioned ingame (but mentioned in FAQ from game devs, so they not license it but even paid commercial gamespy do that for free for debs).

Game Ranger exist from time Q2 released. Mplay HeatPlay WON and many else are predecessor's for GameSpy. Xfire appear at same time also be mentioned by debs but never be commercialised to debs as official servers hoster.

Anyway. Some of them maybe work for Q2 back in '98. Game itself have only lan, direct-ip and some servers finder without master-server in terms nowadays master-server mean.

You NO NEED anything to play coop with friend. Game Ranger or RadminVPN are optional tools check quality of connection before game itself and making private rooms. During game you put friend IP to connect. Internal IP or such radmin IP. In any case hoster is a person with dedicated port opened connection. No mobile network from smartphone. And no 3rd party solution allow to play if both have limited internet connection (public WI-Fi another example).

Just put IP address. Q2 support TCP-IP direct connection (IPX are unsupported by nowadays Windows but TCP-IP supported and there is no IPX in Q2 (only in Q1)).
