The only thing that is missing for me personally is the PSX version, but other than that this is a great re-release
That's all I'm gonna say
First and Foremost. The game is OBJECTIVELY in a BETTER state than it was before. And it should be in this state because they were selling a non working product before this. To the average buyer, the store page didn't state that heavy config tweaking and modding would be necessary to get the original game experience.
But, even if you subjectively think the game is worse, the original is still there for you and WAS NOT TAKEN AWAY. This is huge and it's a no brainier yet other companies (like Blizzard) do take it away.
I don't like all the changes but they are at least within the spirit of the original game while still achieving the goals one would want to achieve with a remaster. Some remasters only just need to be functionality tune ups.
So, they hit goals like:
-Fixing input to work with modern hardware
-Adding support for modern displays
-Updating old code to modern standards
-QoL'ing
-Adding great accessibility settings
While I don't think the graphics are insanely better, they don't have to be.
Working multiplayer is great, I haven't looked at it yet but I would hope it would have community hosted servers like it used to instead of dev only options like we only see today.
A whole new set of levels is amazing.
N64 version bundled in is amazing
I'm sure there's more I love but all of this is worth $10-15 on it's own in my eyes and yet it was freely given.
Now, obviously, they should have fixed the game for free and released that free. And maybe then they could have charged for the extra levels and extra goodies to finance it and I think that would have been fair.
But they didn't and that decision, that respect buys more than $15 of goodwill from me. It makes me more willing to NOT wait for a sale when that devs or publisher's new game comes out.
So hopefully other companies are paying attention. Huge thanks to the devs and thanks to the publishers.
also the ps1 enemies are in there
- faster weapon switching - This is HUGE. Up til now swapping weapons midfight was almost a death sentence unless you got into cover. It's stil isn't perfect - after you attack you need to wait until the whole attack animation ends and you cannot cancel it so it still requires a bit of foresight but still miles better.
- key bindings - in original game the only way to rebind items and weapons was to edit the config file. Although I don't know why it still doesn't let you bind items directly to a hotkey. the item wheel is nice but It's not the same as quickly pressing a button where you need a powerup right away.
- the power armor now can automatically turned on when cells are available
- enemies have new movesets and behaviors that make the game more dynamic and exciting.
- You can pass through dying enemies much sooner - in original game you had to either gib the enemy or wait until the entire animation sequence finishes playing - and some of them were quite long. This makes the game flow so much nicer
- waypoints on demand - I rarely use this feature baecause I played the game so many times but I did once got lost and this feature allowed me to quickly get back on track.
As for the visuals, the overhaul is very nice but personally I feel like the colors are oversaturated. But this is a personal preference, I actually always enjoyed playing game in software mode becuase it makes the game look more gritty and raw and it matches the aesthetics so well... And this is why I was so baffled when I noticed that this remaster has no software mode. I can turn off colored lightmaps and fog, which helps a little but it's not the same.
But in the end the remaster is superb.
I turned everything off and enjoy the OG look.
I don't need bloom, dynamic shadows and hit markers.
But I like the idea that even zoomers can enjoy this banger with added bells and whistles.
No way.
All the additions they made to the AI and whatnot alone makes this remaster a better game to play. That's not mentioning the brand new campaign.
RTX version is neat, but it's a tech demo. The remaster changes fundamental aspects to the gameplay. Like, even earlier trooper guys will strafe dodge projectiles and even dive to the floor.
And it cost me nothing.
Even if it doesn't get modded.
