A lot of people that use a sourceport will probably recommend Yamagi Q2, from what I've seen on here
Q2 Berserker looks cool, but I never could get it to run right, and the documentation is all in Cyrillic.
This^
vkquake2, it's based on yagami.
Most of the info you'll find on source ports is outdated- I've been considering writing up some guides...
I haven't found a decent 60+fps solution- I personally cap 83fps [the engines default max] w/ RTSS for perfect 12.0ms frametimes.
It's not as smooth as titles running at 144, but it's still pretty nice.

The RTX port can look authentic. You can even go back to the id tech 1 look.
To disable RTX, enter the following launch parameter:
+set vid_rtx 0
And if you you're like me and hate the way OpenGL lacks texture definition, you can enable palettized textures and good contrast.
Enter the in-game "video" menu
Texture gamma > 1.3
Texture filter > nearest
Texture intensity > 3x
Lightmap brightness > 0.0

Runs at 999 fps on a potato, so cap it with vsync or via the console.
Cheers
(Source port)
Then:
Go to https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-2-neural-upscale, follow the readme
(Upscaled textures, models included)
Then:
Go to https://thathomestar.tumblr.com/post/175310498677/quake-and-quake-2-soundtrack-download-links
(Original music files not included in Steam version)
Follow this if you dont know where to put the music:
https://quake.fandom.com/wiki/Yamagi_Quake_2#External_Music
Then lauch normally by Steam, you will have the Vanilla experience, with large FOV and Widescreen supported, automatic play of the music, and upscaled Vanilla textures.
There is also a "Mods" menu.
Profit.
Have a nice day, and message me if you want a Quake 1 build as well, got one with mods pre-packed on my drive.
