Source Ports
Can anyone give me a suggestion for a good source port for Quake 2 that I can play with Quake 2 or the Ground Zero and Reckoning mission packs. I’ve looked them up and found a list of several but I was hoping to get a suggestion fir a good one to try that plays well and makes my games look and play like Doom games on GZDoom. For some reason my games which I’m playing through Steam have no music. Was it like that with the original releases?

I’ll appreciate any suggestions you have. And please provide a link to the download for it if you can.

Most people seem to go with KM Quake 2, but I always found the feel of mouselook in that one a bit odd, plus it forces brightmaps on some textures that did not have them in the original game. YamagiQ2 plays extremely well and it's very faithful to the original functionality of the game. You can get it here:

You can probably find solutions to any random issues you have here:

The original releases had music, however it would only play by reading it from the disc, which had to be loaded in your cd rom drive while you played. The Steam releases obviously don't have this, nor do they have any kind of emulated simulation of it.

Ok so I downloaded the YamagiQ2 for Windows file and tried to open the yquake2 application and I get an error that says "can't load pics/colormaps.pcx" Do I have to paste any files from my quake folders into this folder like having pk3 files in a gzdoom folder?

This is the documentation for installing it. Your essentially going to install YamagiQ2 into it's own directory, then copy over some of the Quake 2 files.

Yes, the .PAK files from baseq2 folder.

Any other issues, you can just save yourself the hassle and try this https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1223177211

I did everything it said and it worked. Quake 2 now loads through the source port. But when I click on the yquake2 application it only loads quake 2. How do I load Reckoning and Ground Zero? I tried downloading the Reckoning v2.06 from the downloads section on this page https://www.yamagi.org/quake2/ and extracted it to the folder with all the yquake files but I can't find an application to load that game.

Make a shortcut for quake2.exe and at the end of it's target path, type +set game rogue for Ground Zero or +set game xatrix for The Reckoning. The target path should look like this:

"C:\Users\Quake 2\quake2.exe" +set game rogue

or something similar.

It worked! Thanks man!

Yamagi if you want a fairly faithful to original but improved experience.

Quake II XP if you want a modern graphics Quake II.

Quake II RTX if you own a RTX card (don't bother if you don't).

Quake II Pro if you want a MP oriented experience.

R1Q2 if you want a vanilla-faithful MP experience.

Q2 Evolved if you want a buggy but interesting upgrade of the vanilla game.

Quake II Berserker if you want a buggy modern graphics port.

KM Quake 2 won't boot on my system so I can't comment it.

the best imo is q2rtx. can be run in rtx mode or opengl - runs at 1000fps and supports mp and some mods ive tested
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1089130/Quake_II_RTX/
just change rtx renderer to opengl renderer in video settings

I installed it but it won't startup. I tried opening it through the Quake 2 RTX folder and it says it's missing the vulkan-1.dll file

I tried the Quake 2 XP mod but when I start it up I just get a gray screen for a few seconds then it crashes back to desktop. I checked this one out on youtube and it looks like a pretty cool upgrade so I'd like to get this one working if possible.

I just wanted to add that I love Yamagi Quake II so much!
It fixed so many weird video/ compatibility issues from the original. I finally managed to beat Strogg gone mad with it!

Try some older Quake II Berserker build if you can't run Quake II XP.

Yamagi is great indeed, I suggest some HD texture pack with it:
