Getting music to work (without changing anything else)
Whenever I read a discussion on how to get Quake II's music to work, the only solution I see from people is to download mods that also make other changes to the game such as making the textures higher quality and making the explosions sprites instead of models among other things. I don't want to change any of these things (I actually love the 3D modeled explosions) I JUST want the music to work, that's all.

Google "Quake 2 Soundtrack .iso".
Download the .iso. This is legal - you own a legit copy of the game, you're entitled to the music.
Burn the .iso to CD.
Make sure CD is in your computer's CD/DVD/Blu-ray device.
Load Quake 2.
Enjoy music.

CD is the only way to get Quake II's music to work without using a sourceport. Either way, I'd say a warranty claim is in order. I know I wouldn't accept a broken drive like that.

Burning oneself any tentracked CD audio is the easiest solution and having it in the CD drive while playing Quake2 to go, but what Phoenix said here:

is a valid way of bypassing the requirement to have a CD drive on the rig. The downloaded softwere creates a vitual CD drive, reading the data from hard drive. Only problem there can be is that you may eventually need to rename your original CD drive to some latter letter of the alphabet and the vitrual drive to something closer to the beginning, as it is possible - as I have read - Quake will recognize only the first CD drive in alphabetical order.

Here is the link, handed to you princess:

It's not exactly broken, I can get it open if I fidget around with it, but if I just press the button and don't (carefully) fidget around with it, it only opens like 5% of the time.

I'd still consider that defective. I use Pioneer drives exclusively as I've never had one give me a problem in over 10 years. I can't count how many Creative and off-brand drives I've seen fail to eject, throw the drive band, and break in various other ways.
