One or two of the developers of La-mulana helped with porting it from MSX to windows.
I also personally liked Bunny Must Die (Another Greenlight Game); which is also a metroidvania with similar gameplay to La-mulana.
If you don't feel like reading above:
Maze of Galious (Knightmare 2)
Bunny Must Die
An Untitled Story
By the way I suggest you all to go to play TREASURE ADVENTURE GAME.
It is free for the computer, developed over two years by just one person, it is very long, clever and highly based on exploration! They are currently remaking it in hd with the name treasure adventure world but I do not like the new graphics at all.
I also didn't know that they were remaking it. Wow; now I'm all excited~
I played the demo, then bought it lol.
Some people says it likes Maze of Galious.
BTW, I like castlevania, so I'm currently finding lot of game that like castlevania,
La-mulana, unepic... and I'm still finding!
A game that is supported by Nigoro (they have a picture of it on there website with the caption of "Pick up game! Hey!) which I have loved is a freeware downloadable dungeon crawler RPG called Demon King Chronicle. You can find an english version on PLAYISM along with a virtual unused game art collection.
It's because of this that there are many game that are similar but at the same time don't even come close.
I've played Bunny must Die before, and I really liked it despite how simple it was.
Still, it can't be compared with La-Mulana. If there's anything, La Mulana probally introduced me to other games that do share the same ideas.
This is what I truly love about Nigoro. They have this idea of evolving retro games, and I think they do a great job. I mean, they do copy ideas, but at the same time? When I played La Mulana and Future Development Company, I was wondering why I never seen any other games like them. It's hard to pin down, but the general experience does feel unique.
But none really combine the format with Metroidvania'ness... Perhaps You Have to Win the Game, and The Power, but not really.
Try Cave Story if you like the platforming game with excellent story, but its definitely more linear and less puzzly. Still an epic game, regardless.
