War For The Overworld vs Dungeons 2
This game looks great but the title is misleading. It's called War For The Overworld yet you never get to play in the overworld nor do you get to bring war to it, you're basically just building a dungeon and defending it, where does the war for the overworld come into play? Besides what seems to be just being another Dungeon Keeper game what convinced you to buy this game over Dungeons 2? A game where you actually do get to go to the surface and fight the "good" that inhabits it, tainting the land as you claim it. Dungeons 2 just seems to have so much more going for it. What are your thoughts?

As far as i know:

There once was a game series called Dungeon Keeper. Many years ago. It was pretty successful and i dont know why but they never finished developing Dungeon Keeper 3.
The development title was: Dungeon Keeper 3 - War for the Overworld.

Since EA has the rights on the Dungeon Keeper IP they can't call their game Dungeon Keeper 3 and i doubt they'd even want it. Hence the Name War for the Overworld because this game is kind of a spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper series many people (including me) were waiting for for a long time.

I dunno, I tried Dungeons 1, and it personally wasn't really my cup of Earl Grey tea.

Not really into the whole 'gimmicks' thing to build up your power, nor fattening up the enemies to milk them. That sort of implanted a negative impression of the Dungeons series in my mind.

Well, that's my own opinion. So far War for the Overworld seems to be closer to the original Dungeon Keeper 2, which might be just what I am looking for.

Edit: Maybe 'War for the Underworld' suits it better? LOL!

They've done away with that whole system. It's actually almost a stretch to call it a sequal given how much has changed.

Regardless, I'm getting both. :)

Me too, dungeons1, 2 , their extensions, WFTO, Dwelvers, and DK1 & 2 !
And DF, but this is another story...
It seems to me that Dwelvers is DF inspired.

Dungeons 2 looks more like a starcraft like rts game than anything. While war of the overworld sticks with the dungeon building rts thing.

Well "War for the Overworld" is alot more like DK, then Dungeons 2. The thing about Dungeons 2 is. It reminds me ALOT of Impire. Another try of a "Sequel" to Dungeon Keeper that failed miserably...It had a Overworld too. Just compare "Impire" with "Dungeons 2". You will see a resemblance.

Personally I think Dungeons 2 resembles DK2 a lot more than it resembles Impire. Though certainly not as much as WftO.

Interesting bit of information, thanks Evil.

Dungeons 1 was a poor attempt to cash in on DK Nostalgia, the game was dull, boring and more of a tower defense game than a dungeon keeper successor. It never felt like you were building a dungeon, rather it felt like you were racing the clock every level. The whole dungeon portal system with near never ending streams of unstoppable heroes spoiled it for me.

It was a typical Kalypso product, great concept, terrible execution, so unless they learned a great deal since then, I wouldnt expect much from Dungeons 2

I confused Dungeons 1 for Dungeons 2. Apparently Dungeons 2 is a very different game from Dungeons 1.

Impire was ok. But the problem for me is I just wanted a Dungeon Keeper 3 so it's hard to be unbiased.

Glad this game so far plays out like DK.

Closer to DK3 you will not come, it was an instant buy for me on kickstarter 2 and a half years ago, never had doubt, latest version looks very promising.

Didnt DK2 have a trailer for DK3 on the disc?

EA's last foray into the realms of the horny one was DK mobile, a vacuous appstore cowclicker. I think they've burned their bridges with the series.

I saw the original Dungeons and was very dissapointed, the developers of that game made it look like a spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper and even had it actively compared to Dungeon Keeper in an interview, but it was nothing like Dungeon Keeper.

Sure it was asthetically similar, but Dungeons can be summed up like this. You decorate walls with books and candles and put down piles of gold. Heroes then enter through a door, look at the books and candles, and try to steal your gold. Once their happiness meter is full, you run out at the last minute and kill them before they exit the dungeon, so that you can decorate the walls with more books and candles and lay down more piles of gold.

And pretty much everything you unlock serves this exact functuon. Monsters don't have an AI beyond standing in one place and auto attacking heroes that come near so that heroes can kill to fill up their happiness meter. Traps are there mainly for rogues to disarm to fill their happiness meter. Arcane Tomes are there for wizards to fill their happiness meter. It's all basically the same as placing books and candles on the wall and placing down gold.

Nothing at all like Dungeon Keeper. I don't know about Dungeons 2 but Dungeons should have been an IOS game on a mobile device.
