Performance - How I fixed mine
Hi there
I had really bad performance in my game and the animations seemed weird and the game was stuttering. It didn't matter if I changed the graphic settings or anything. It was just unplayable.
I have had a lot of trouble with console ports in my time and it has taught me a little about what the usual problems.

What I did to get Brütal Legend to run smooth 60 fps on my old rig is as follows...
In the game, go to options -> game -> enable "Hi-Fi sim".
Go to your control panel for you graphics card and Enable "Vertical Sync", "Triple buffering" and set "Max pre-rendered frames" to 3.

My game went from a funky stuttering weirdofest wearing white pants to a proper rockout!
I hope this can guide some of you with performance problems to a solution.

It appears to have worked for me. Still some FPS-drop, but much improved, at least until the developers can release a proper patch.

Thanks!

If you are interested: Brütal Legend's engine uses a fixed timestep for its simulation. ...

Wauw! Interesting! Thanks for that Farrell, I believe I learned something new today :)
Hey cool explanation thanks!
I'm running Brütal Legend on a 3 year old Macbook Pro. Would you please suggest any under-the-hood tweaks I can use to get some more framerate out of this sucker?

Awesome game.

I was having a lot of issues playing the game, but this boosted it quite a bit! Thank you so much!
Thanks man.
I also noticed that this game strangely has performance-issues, even though it doesn't use the fanciest visuals and technologies. I guess it's a porting-issue though. Also, it's not that it's absolutely terrible performance, but it does bump down the framerate the higher the Anti-Aliasing-setting. The highest setting would turn it below 30fps on my system, and one step lower would put it in the 40s. I consider that playable, but it's strange that it's still that low for this game.

But anyway, I'll try those settings and see what happens.

Edit: It seems that it smoothens the performance, but it still doesn't really up the framerate by much. Also, ironically, turning the "Hi-Fi"-setting on gives for worse performance than with it off. It actually introduces the weird stutters and what not, although the new system-settings smoothen it out a bit. It's better for me to run it with the setting off, it still gives a framerate above 30.

Also, I'll mess with some other settings some more later on. I use this little program called nVidia Inspector, which basically is an expanded version of the nVidia-settings you get in the regular software. And in this program you have access to a lot more settings which sometimes hold a key to better performance.

The hi-fi sim means the game will simulate and render at 60 frames per second. By default, the game renders at 30 frames per second. If your machine can handle it, you definitely want to enable the hi-fi simulation.

Ah ok! Thanks for clarifying :)

If "Hi-Fi sim" is off by default. It will cause all Brütal Legend PC players, that has any feel for framerates, be annoyed by the performance of this game until they find this option (if they do). And I think that includes the majority of the PC playerbase.

In my personal subjective opinion (no offense) this option should not exist. At least not for the PC.
I am sure there is some reason for it to be there, but I can't see why (I probably just don't know).
A game should either run as fast as it can (be that 20, 42 or 157 fps) or match the speed of the monitor used. Unless there is some special reason as to why.
Please educate me on the matter if possible :)

And by the way. thanks a lot for taking interest in the thread farrell_david.

waAAAAAAT i almost got this game 100% completed and now i find out i missed a setting why jeeebus lol oh well at least i can use it to finish brutal mode:Doviculus:
I have an i7-2600K and GTX 690 in Windows 7 and these settings in addition to disabling the in-game vsync made the game somewhat smoother. There's still significant stuttering but it's better. Scrolling around the map is still choppy, and while playing solos the marker doesn't move smoothly across the screen.

Sorry for the huge bump but this really works guys. :3
thanks, i used to have that problem and now it is working fine.
Don't alter your max pre-render frames unless you know what you're doing.

Higher pre-render = better performance, but heavy input delay

Low pre-render (0-1) = Worse performance, most responsive device input
That's true verycatchy, but some games just doesn't work right unless you run at the exact pre-rendered frame amount that the game was made for. I find this to be true for a lot of games primarily made for consoles.

yeah no still stutters on map when driving the car. i reckon its just a bug to be honest.
thanks for the help i am a TF2 100fps player but i had for a long time only 15 fps in brutal legend . the advices you gave me make me run in 25 fps when lucky so this is quite a playable rate tks

OH! One more ting I'd like to mention about vsync.
If your machine can't / won't run the game with atleast as many fps as your monitors refrehs rate it will clamp at half.
For an example, without "Hi-Fi sim" but with the vsync options enabled. My game would run "smooth" at 30 fps (half my monitors refresh rate) becuase it could not, for whatever reason, draw 60 fps.
Any fps of 59 or below clamps at 30 when using vsync on a 60 Hz monitor.
This image shows a bit of what I mean (notice the white line).
http://www.geforce.com/Active/en_US/shared/images/articles/introducing-the-geforce-gtx-680-gpu/AdaptiveVSync-1.png

This might explain why, even with the correct settings, the game still runs slow and stutters a tiny bit all the time. Simply because it is forced to do so becuase of vsync if your game can't run with an optimal framerate.

(I don't know what "Hi-Fi sim" does, but I think the game is limited in fps by default in some way, this option seems to remove that. In any case, it allows my game to run 60 fps. Maybe even more if I didn't use vsync).

Just this comment alone has helped make my game run so much better. i turned off vsync and BOOM, i can play with all my other visuals maxed. slight tiny stutter when camera has to readjust but it runs great! thanks!
