Tomb Raider I

Tomb Raider I

Game won’t save!
I am new to the steam world, but I love the TR original games. Made it to third level and died; game started over at the beginning! What do I do (in dummy terms because I am so NOT tech savvy) to change this? Also in TR 2, I can’t use the PS3 controller ive been using on all other games for nothing! Won’t even respond to it at all! Any help is appreciated for this newb!

First, make sure you are using the "automated fix". It's essential for playing TR1 on modern hardware.

Anyway, to save...

Press the 'escape' key to open your inventory
Press the 'down' arrow key
Choose your passport
Press the 'right' arrow key and choose 'save game'.

There are no auto-saves in TR. You need to save manually. Get into the habit of creating a save at the very beginning of each level. And don't overwrite those.

For controller, look at this:

And if that doesnt work you might need learn how to use a joypad mapper:

I’m checking out the auto fix now- and the controller has worked on all other games (terraria, TR2013, ROTTR, and TR1996) but when I go to TR2, it won’t let me use it just doesn’t even give me the option to. I’ll check into the other link though thank you!
That being said once the auto fix downloads, do I need to do anything else or just go right back into TR1996 and start playing?

Modern controllers don't work with older TR games by default. It's a known problem. But there are a bunch of fixes/workarounds to get them working properly (two of which I posted above).

And, after you finish downloading the automated fix, you just need to install it, then set up your controller, and then play the game.

The automated fix doesn't fix the controller issues (it fixes, graphics/music etc). You'll still need to set up the controller seperately.

Okay thank you much! I did attempt the install of the auto fix (went passed the “download anyway” and all that), and it did start to download - but then said it couldn’t download. I can work with bad graphics and now that you’ve reminded me how to save the game -XD- I can play the 1996 version just fine. I’ll have to do the joy to play the TR2 though because me and a keyboard just ain’t happening haha thank you for the responses and tips!

It's not just the graphics though, the PC version has no music too. It's worth trying to get the automated fix installed because it fixes all that kinda stuff and really makes a big improvement to the game.

Playing Tomb Raider without the soundtrack is a crime against gaming. ;)

Manually save after each pick up then you wont loose anything if you die.. it already has the fixes or it should. I downloaded mine and it is fine. Just pick game at the beginning new game and it should work. if you go through the pages of the game it has save game and load and exit.
