Anyway, to save...
Press the 'escape' key to open your inventory
Press the 'down' arrow key
Choose your passport
Press the 'right' arrow key and choose 'save game'.
There are no auto-saves in TR. You need to save manually. Get into the habit of creating a save at the very beginning of each level. And don't overwrite those.

That being said once the auto fix downloads, do I need to do anything else or just go right back into TR1996 and start playing?
And, after you finish downloading the automated fix, you just need to install it, then set up your controller, and then play the game.
The automated fix doesn't fix the controller issues (it fixes, graphics/music etc). You'll still need to set up the controller seperately.
Playing Tomb Raider without the soundtrack is a crime against gaming. ;)
