It works perfectly, with joytokey (or any other mapper).
With TR1 I've also used MANY other pads, including a variety of direct-input pads, and X-input pads, as well as oldschool serial port pads.
Basically all pads work, as long as you know how to use them.
I use ds4 windows, key mapping apps are trash
No, it doesn't. You need DS4Win...
People really shouldn't be using the vanilla Steam/DOSbox version of TR1 when we have "TombATI" now, which makes the game run 1000x better on modern systems. Although even that still requires joypad mapping for controllers to work correctly with full button functionality.
Plug your PS4 Controller in
Go to Steam Controller Settings & make sure PS4 Controller is checked
Start the game & it will control exactly the same as it did on a PS1
