It's at the dry-cleaners when he's at the Jefferson Memorial, unfortunately.
Also, consider that he made not have done it one journey, but may have taken several respites along the way. He could be pretty sneaky too, and just avoid trouble. It's probably likely as he's an eminent scientist, he could simply talk his way out of trouble.
There's a myriad of simple solutions that spring to my mind, but my personal opinion is that he called in at various places and travelled along with a few colleagues every time he ventured out.
Don't forget he wasn't going out into the unknown. He CAME from outside, and had established friends and colleagues out in the wasteland.
Hope this helps soothe your mind ;)
Although, the only thing I think is a little jarring is that he buggers off pretty quickly - you get woken up because you're Dad's gone, so that would logically mean within the last 24 hours, yet he's WAY ahead of you even when you get to Megaton. Maybe this might indicate he has access to quick-moving transport or caravan?
In addition to what Fawkes says (I do agree about the time in Tranquility Lane - nice one), note that when you reach Megaton and speak to Moriarty, both he and the Sheriff mention your dad had been through WEEKS before. This might seem impossible, but it's really most likely he kept nipping in and out of the vault, unbeknown to the Overseer.
