The gauss gun is a mess

I recently accuired the gauss gun after completing the anchorage simulation, and it's frustrating me to no end. The damn thing doesn't do any damage half the time, and sometimes it even passes through enemies without even scratching them. What the hell?

Anyone else experiencing this? Any idea how to fix it?

Ive found with certain weapons, typically snipers, have to aim left a bit, least for me, haven't done anchorage yet, but my plasma pistol misses alot, even at point blank at super muties...The game still takes statistics into account even if not using VATS. so if wounded, heal up.

Also, the problem is that most of the times, the hit CLEARLY registers (enemies flinch or may even get knocked off their feet), but it doesn't damage them at all :c

It really sucks... The gauss rifle looks awesome.
