2) Yes, but you won't need the downgrade patcher as you will with Steam.
3) You'll need the store, but beyond that, no, you can launch directly afaik.

If you want your games consolidated on a single platform where you're a verified game owner on the forums and can upload screenshots, etc., then Steam is the "best" version. In terms of "just get it working", there's about a 2-3 minute difference in setup. To me, that doesn't exactly separate one version from another in terms of "best".
