Welcome to THEO
When your aponent does a heavey downward strike you can jump back or sideways. I just use the ASD of WASD for this.
To use your gun you must first load its amunition in the Items screen, then pressing Q you will shoot.
First of all - as was said, slow your game down. This is essential for counters and parries.
Second - choose your blade carefully, and adjust the way you fence to the equipped blade. Really much depends on HOW you use your blade.
(Sorry if I'm being a Cap here, after all, you're quite the way into the game as I can see)
There are 6 types of strikes (+block):
slash (left MB): it's fast and doesn't waste much energy;
heavy strike (middle MB): very slow and powerful, always gets through enemy block, requires lots of energy;
(btw, I'm pretty sure I'm getting the names of the strikes wrong, but I guess you'll get the idea which strike is which)
thrust (right MB): a bit slower than the slash, wastes about the same amount of energy;
group strike (Shift + left MB): deals damage to all the enemies in about 180-degree range, consumes a lot of energy
counter (Shift + middle MB): if performed when your enemy is about to strike, you will counterattack and deal some damage to an enemy; requires very little energy
parry (Shift + right MB): if performed when your enemy is about to strike, you will parry ALL the enemies' strikes at the moment and also throw them off balance; doesn't require energy.
Don't rely on blocking too much as block is quite easy to get through; try to use parry instead.
Now, to the blades.
There are 3 types of them. Rapiers deal less damage, but waste less energy. Heavy blades deal more damage, but they will consume your energy quite fast. Sabers and such are somewhere in the middle.
There are also several characteristics apart from dmg points:
-Balance. It can range from 0.0 to 2.0 If it's less than 1.0, the blade will be good for thrusts and counters, if it's more than 1.0, it will be good for slashing, heavy strikes and group strikes
-Weight. Basically, it works just like the weapon type. The more the weight, the more damage you will deal and more energy you will need.
-Length of the blade. Long blades are good for thrusts, slashes and group strikes. Short blades are good for heavy strikes and counters.
-Curve. Straight blades are good for thrusts and counters. Curved blades are good for slashing, heavy and group strikes.
So, if you use proper strikes on proper blades, you will deal significantly more damage. Vice versa, if you heavy strike with a light straight rapier, for example, you will deal next to no damage.
Also, try to position yourself properly, so you're not surrounded by enemies. Try not to fight many enemies at once, too. Taking on up to 3 enemies at once should be fine; more can be a pain in the buttocks.
I guess that's all about fencing.
Wow. Thanks. I got as far in the game as I did by doing a lot of save / loading whenever there was a fight like that. One time I was in a governor's mansion doing a quest where I think I was stealing diamonds from a chest for his wife and I had to load my save at least a dozen times. Eventually I did some fanciness where I was hitting him through a wall. Anyway, hopefully I can fence better now after reading that. Thanks.
