Should i go full pirate?
Hi all

Getting into the game properly finally after buying it ages ago, just wondering if i should go full pirate? Im quite drawn to the pirates life, was wondering if id perhaps lock out too much of the game if i did and went hostile to all nations?

If anyone can be bothered, can you list drawbacks and benefits of this style of playing?

Many thanks!

I think it will be very hard to repair your ships in that case, becouse most pirate towns do not have shipyards. Only Sharptown has one, but it is situated in really bad position on the north-east corner of the map. And if all nations will be hostile to you that means you will have a lot of battles (with other pirate too) and without shipyard your will be helpless. So this playstyle lock you in coner of the map or you will be forced to spend a lot of time repairing your ship by yourself.

As a hostile pirate you will not be able follow the main plots in the game without spending a fortune to repair nation reputations. There will be lots of good battles and looting to be done as a friendly.

If you just got into the game, it might be wise to play an easier path at first. Being full pirate is very hard. You will get a bounty on your head from some nations after a time as well as assasins sent after your head. You would also have trouble repairing and resupplying. Also it would be pretty impossible to follow the main questline. You could potentially pull it off if you are high level and have a fast ship.
High stealth and that perk (scourge of the sea was it? ) could help you avoid most unnecesarry land and sea fights.

Depends on the difficulty you chose, if you're playing on normal you will be fine regardless on hard it's a bit more difficult I guess. You will miss a couple of "routine" quests but other than that you won't miss anything as far as I remember and you can even skill "trustworthy" if you really want to do them later in the game.

Just don't attack too many ships in the beginning or you'll get a bounty pretty fast and don't rock the pirate flag too much otherwise you won't be able to use the cities at all and get attacked by everything.

I would also advice you to bring back stolen ships here and there in order to keep you reputation in check.

This all sounds a bit negative but trust me it's fun as hell being a pirate in the game and it's completely managable. Being a pirate also opens a lot of opportunities to make insane amount of money.

Just have fun and do it!

thanks all for your fine advice, i think my game plan considering all advice, is to try to get a better ship such as a frigate of some sort then perhaps go full pirate if i am confident, many thanks to you all.

I think this may have been different if we was able to perhaps cap ports and turn them to pirate havens but i assume this is a COAS thing and not a TEHO?

Depending on your fighting style, you might find a xebec (a class 3 ship) works well. It's fast, maneuverable and will sail very close to the wind, especially with a Pilgrim's amulet. My current one has 22 twenty pounders, 2928 carago capacity, 15.89 speed, 60 maneuverability, 3233 hull hit points, 31/148 against the wind with the Pilgrim's amulet and carries 150 crew which can be overloaded.

If you can't find one to capture, you can buy one at Dutch or Spanish shipyards after you reach level 8.

The last polacre I saw at a shipyard had about the same cargo, hit points, and the same weapons. I didn't notice what crew it carried, but it wasn't nearly as fast or maneuverable. I ain't afraid o' nuthin' in a polacre. :) I don't see frigates that often.

The xebec was a favored ship of Mediterranean pirates, and several made it to the new world. Some navies even experimented with building their own.

Sadly, we can only loot cities and not capture them for now. I also liked that thing in COAS. If you finish the jolly roger ( 7th quest I think), you will get acces to a secret base of your own.

For now it is pretty much useless unless you want to store cargo and stuff in boxes (and another girl to have fun), but they might add new stuff in the future.

Это без Пилигрима. С ним - из-за глюка, вообще, не имеет значение направление ветра ;)
