On vanilla? Get a rope, two sticks and merge them into fence kit. Then choose a placement for a fence which you could later transform into a gate. Also remember about positioning - when your placement starts youre looking at future construction from inside - you can rotate it and easily make mistake. After fence kit is installed you must place inside its necessities - either through menu or simply by adding materials from hands. You need two wooden logs (fallen trees spawn that). Use a shovel, pickaxe or gardening hoe to install logs. After that add some wooden planks and nails. Hammer or meat tenderizer will give you options to build framing and panels. If you want to make a gate then also add a metal wire and install it via pliers. You can lock it with combination lock in vanilla. First choose your code (by having a lock in your hands) and then add it to the gate. Community servers usually have electronic codelocks as alternative. Installation is similar - place them at your gates and then provide them with passwords which you also need to confirm.

You can also use the hatchet or "hand axe" to construct walls/gates.

You need quite an arsenal of tools to do a wall or gate.

Shovel, axe or hatchet (pretty sure hatchet works as a hammer), saw, pliers, nails, metal wire….. Feels like I’m missing something. But basically it’s nearly impossible to even carry all the tools you need at one time, especially now with the smaller inventory spaces.

And yeah its hard to transport, but still possible.

[2x4/5] Saw
1x Backslot for shovel or garden shovel or [2x5] Military shovel
[1x3] Pliers
[2x3] Wire or [1x4] If you build a trap with wire first
[3x3] Codelock
[1x1] Nails (better more)

[1x2] sharpen stone

If you have a axe you also need a hammer [2x3].
Hatchet works as hammer in 1.25. Didnt tested since 1.26.

Its best to put a backpack with building stuff near the base befor you find all items to collect everything.
